A question here for both the FOG's and all the other newbies:

At what rate of progression has/is your personal cigar inventory spiraled out of control?

Being someone (although not clinically diagnosed) who has OCD tendencies, I keep finding myself seeing deals and offers on sticks, and thinking, "Oh, I'll never see that good a deal again, I should start stocking up!"

Maybe I should just stop reading the "Hot Deals" area of this board!

What has everyone else's experiences been like? Any good tips on keeping myself under control?

my self controll, otherwise known as my wife, i what keeps me in check. ;)

to quote one of my favorite movies of all time, Pulp Fiction,
Julius to Vincent Vega "...my wife is vegetarian, by default, that makes me vegetarian...."

I had to put myself on a buying freeze. In my first 2 months on this board, I have spent more money than I care to think about on cigars. Because of this, I had to buy a new humidor to store all of my recent purchases. Not a bad thing, mind you, but something I had to put a stop to before my wife got on my case. Anyway, both my desktop and Barrister humidors are full now so I don't have any place to put more cigars even if I bought them. That is, until I buy another Barrister to stack on the one I have.

I'm actually getting things more under control. I went from a max of just about 1200 cigars down to under 900 now. I can see it going to 750 eventually.

Now that is the kind of unrestrained, obsessive cigar purchasing that I like to hear. Why hold yourself back? If you can pay the rent and meet the bills...buy cigars. :p

I'm thinking the wife is going to keep me in check. We're going through that "reducing debt" phase of our lives. Medical school for her was very expensive, alas we have a small mortgage worth of school loans that we're paying on. And so we're trying to get our spending in check, so we can start allocating extra money towards getting rid of those damn loans, so it's hard to start ordering boxes or cigars for lot of $$! Maybe if I just buy less expensive (under $100/box) cigars I can fly under the radar. I've got to go research that guy from Texas' posts, who is apparantly very knowledgable about decent budget cigars. Then maybe every now and then, a nice $10-20 smoke will be even that much better!

I have had moments of indulging in the buying frenzy. It sure is good. For the most part I can buy what I want when I want. But, how many boxes can you have?

When you can't smoke that often what use is it to become a collector if you can't fire up one of your prize possesions. You'll find out that if you buy in twos you'll be able to discard the second one if you don't like. If you buy in boxes they become expensive lessons, especially if your tastes change.

Yeah it's nice to buy boxes as you can justify it as your saving money especially if you find something you like. On the other hand I enjoy going to a retail store and buying a few cigars at a time and shooting the breeze with the owner.

YMMV

Good luck on retiring those med school loans quickly. That'll give more income to buy in bulk. :D

BTW, where again is Hamilton, NJ? I grew up in Randolph, but haven't been back since around '93. I still have some HS school buddies that are around, it's always interesting to hear about what's happening out there.

Near the state capitol of Trenton.

Just figure out a way to get a secret account for your cigars.

I'm going to give this method a try this afternoon. There's one store here in town, unfortunately every time I have gone, there was just one employee, a kid, who professes to know nothing about cigars. So finally I was able to get out of him when the owner would be there, and it's this afternoon.

That only works when she catches me. :p I have had many shipments sent to a friends address. So far I have managed to keep under the radar most of the time. :whistling:
I have a very addictive presonality. When I find something I like I usually do it to death. Since November I have pretty much filled a 100 stick humi and my 50qt coolidor is pushing maximum density. I also have a small coolidor for the box of Camacho Liberty Amendment XII that won't fit in my large coolidor. The sad thing is, due to the weather up here my smoking is pretty limited so the overwhelming majority of the cigars I have stockpiled I have never even tried.
Overall I would have to agree with ricmac25 and say "it's exponential".

Hey AVB if you need any help lowering your count let me know...I think I could be of some help.

As for my personal stash it has gone from about 10 to roughly 75 in a matter of weeks. Certainly by no means a high end stash as it is mostly made up of what most would consider lower end cigars but growing none the less. I know if I did not have the fiance watching over me I would have bought a TON more as I to surf to to many deal sites including cbid which is like crack.

I had about 20 when I joined, and just now got a 100 count humi, and it's maxed. I guess if you want to be technical, I've got 20 something stoggies in a pass, and I'm a two a day (usually more!) smoker, so I go threw alot...

As for saving your money, give yourself a weekly budget. Don't go over it. If you want a nicer stick, say your weekly budget is 20, and you want a padron 40th (25 or so) spend only 10 one week and keep the change. It makes life a little less stressful and makes that padron a hell-of-alot better, IMHO. ;)

Definately spending quite a bit on smokes! But very fun trying/testing/tasting the (what it seems) unlimited variences of cigars.

Although the trial phase is fun, I still think that I will eventually stick with the Cohiba staple(s); however, I could be saying this until my late FOG days (LFOGD's).

I really wonder how many documented (different) cigars brands/types there are out there (maybe I should of tried a search on CP first...I'll work it backwards!)

Oh, yeah KB - like the new signature quote - sounds like Chappelle's work!

I send the extras to the troops, they seem to have an unlimited need. Their nearest B&M is really a hike down the road! ;)

If you're seriously concerned, set some goals for your acquisitions. I'm pretty focused when I make a purchase...it is either to try a new cigar, or to stock up on boxes of those that I like for aging. I don't smoke a lot...maybe 1-3 a week at the most, so I need to be pretty disciplined about my buying or I would just end up with more than I could ever smoke in a lifetime. A good deal on something by itself doesn't interest me. A good deal on a box I know I'm going to smoke or that will appreciate in value is what I end up falling for.
