hello everyone,

INTRODUCTION

welcome to the inaugural edition of "The Saturday Evening Smoke"

as mentioned in a previous post, i am fairly new to fine cigars and i limit myself to one cigar a week as a way to relax and as something to look forward to (quality over quantity). i only have hand-rolled long-filler dominican churchills (7 x 48 give or take) in my humidor and i pass on sticks that contain any NIC or HON content. also, as i am still in the purchasing-singles-before-committing-to-full-box-quantities phase, this series will chronicle my search for "a few good cigars" by reviewing my collection of cigar singles. i have smoked a handful of cigars already and might try them again and review them towards the end of this series in order to make it complete.

the format of this series is not set in stone and is still a work-in-progress that will evolove and develop over time hopefully with feedback from you readers.

THIS WEEK'S SMOKE

brand: davidoff
name: double R
size: 7-1/2" x 50
body: MED-FULL
wrapper: ECU CON
binder: DOM
filler: DOM

NOTES FROM MY CIGAR LOG

full body, loose draw, cool smoke, poorly rolled, kept going out, wrapper leaf unravelled at 1/2 and became harsh and bitter, just plain awfull

COMMENTARY

it punched clean with my xikar 007 punch cutter (the only way to go).
draw was extremely loose.
lit easily with my zippo (NO lectures please).
burn was cool and only slightly uneven.
i would definitely consider this a full bodied cigar.
hints of raisin, currants and pepper were evident during the first third.
it became apparent that it was poorly rolled when i tapped off the ash the first time and there were small voids in the center.
i had to re-light this twice during the first half and had to draw more frequently than usual to keep it lit.
at about the halfway mark the wrapper unravelled completely (like an unpierced bratwurst exploding on a BBQ), the smoke became harsh and bitter and thus i had to call it a night.

CONCLUSION

this is one DOG of a dominican churchill.

many of you like these cigars but i found that it was just plain awful and considering its stratospheric price "disappointed" and "annoyed" are understatements. this cigar is definitely not my style but i still cannot bring myself (with a clear conscience) to recommend this particular to anyone nor will i buy another one. however, i do have several other davidoff churchill cigars that will be reviewed at some point in the future (remember only one cigar per week for me).

your comments, questions and/or suggestions are always welcomed and appreciated.

thanks,
mike

Not all reviews can be good ones. I say start your review series, it'd be interesting to follow. :)

(i only have a problem with these)

I don't like to punch my cigars, so I can't smoke one of these I guess.

and a zippo? OMG like totally don't get me started, thank god I don't have to

Blech. Sounds terrible!

I agree with Holmes, start the series.

Hey, wasn't this the cigar that Binyamin Netanyahu used to spend the Israeli people's money on? Or was that the Special T?

Wilkey

Wow. Sorry the Double R was so bad for you. I buy them buy the box (of 50) -- smoked one last night, in fact -- and the worst I've had was one with a draw problem a few weeks ago. I smoke inside and my girlfriend really likes how they smell. They're quite yummy, too. Perhaps you were the victim of a torcedor's bad day....

Netanyahu is a cigar smoker? I like him even more now.

I've never encountered a poorly constructed Davidoff, and I've smoked a lot of them. I hope that doesn't become a regular problem. ??? They cost too damn much to have construction issues. :0

By all means start your series if that's what you want to do. It's always interesting to read the reviews here and the more the merrier.

Sorry to hear of your experience with this cigar. Certainly that is not the norm for Davidoffs, I wouldn't write them off just yet.

I was handed one of the DOuble R's with a bunch of years (Jim, 01? 02?...not sure) on them by our very own friendly B&M owner, JimD. We smoked them on the ride to the Schlessingers. And for a while at the herf.
I am terribly sorry you had such a poor expereinece with it. SOunds terrible indeed. I have had Davidoffs that I like, ones that I love, and ones that really blew me away. Some are a beat too mild for me. But I can honestly say that I have never had a poorly constructed one. I have noticed that they need to be stored very well, and fluctuations that wouldn't bother other cigars do bother Davidoffs.
I hop thsi one bad expereince does not put you off this wonderful brand. They are expensive, but they are, IMHO, almost always worth it. (try the new DOminican Puro....yumm!)

The Double R is a phenomenal smoke. Your initial description of flavors you detected is very similar to my impressions. Although, I would describe the cigar as more of a medium to medium-full bodied cigar.

I would suggest at least part of the problem you may have experienced was using a punch. I'd strongly suggest you use a guillotine cutter and open the foot up. I'm not a big fan of punches on cigars like the Davidoff because of the concentration of tar at one point tends to cause bitter taste - especially as you smoke further along. To me, towards the end is almost unbearable at times.

Not sure about the construction - very few of the Davidoff's I've smoked have come apart like that (the Diademas Finas is the only one I've had serious unraveling problems with - but given it's shape, it's somewhat to be expected). It could possibly be the manner the cigar was stored prior to you purchasing it (i.e. humidity issues). Although, that Connecticut shade wrapper is a rather fragile wrapper.

While pricey, Davidoff's have never disappointed me. I ALWAYS hate to spend the money, but ALWAYS love the experience of smoking one.

I coulda sworn I had already posted in this thread but either it was another Davidoff thread or my computer froze up and my post never made it. :(

I love the Davidoff Millenniums, the Double Rs and the 100th Anniversary ones like the Diademas Finas and like Josh said, I buy most of mine from JimD.

I would suggest that you not give up on these and try a few more, maybe different vitolas. Yep, they're pricey but I think this is one of the few expensive cigars that are well worth the money.

hello coventrycat,

i won't give up on davidoff just yet. as i added to my initial post i have several more davidoffs to try:

anniversario #2
diademas finas (should arrive today)
millenium series churchill

also, does jimD's shop have a website or can you contact him only via email.

thanks,
mike

This is Jim's shop. http://www.thetobaccoshophartford.com/
Say hi from Bill and I. If he doesn't hang up on you immediately...you'll find that Jim is very knowedgeable and helpful. The Milleniums are still one of my favorites. THe RObusto is a great smoke. Now that I think about it...I'm about out of those....Jim's number might be busy.
