My birthday bottle from the scotch buy has one hell of a dent in it, and I did it all by myself. I've been searching for a peat monster as an adjunct to my usual Laphroaig, a scotch I truly love in all its various bottlings. This one surpasses it, quite easily. It appears a nice grade A medium amber in my fancy Ravenscroft scotch glass. On nosing, I got a hell of a whiff of peat smoke, not unlike what you get from a creosote coated stove pipe, a hint of alcohol, Iodine and vanilla. Tasting revealed a blast of peat, honey, the sea (iodine)and perhaps a burnt sugar taste. There's maybe some pear or apple in there, but I'm not quite sure of that. It was very smooth with a honey like quality on the palate. The finish is phenomenal, extremely long, sweet and smoky. I might add that at no time do you get the sense you're drinking 116 proof booze, until maybe three drinks later. I felt no need to add water. I did once but it didn't seem to do anything for it. So, I shit canned that idea. It's quite apparent why this dram has won a couple of prestigious awards. This was an ace for me and I highly recommend this to the Islay lovers among us.
Thanks Ray for the opportunity to drink this.
