The GAS Pass 2009

I didn't know we were allowed to take two and put three in?

This is called "over-putting". You make equal swaps 1 for 1 and then add more to your "Puts" portion in the pass. It's allowed, completely not required, and indicates that have a huge bastid in your pass :sign: !

Love Story sold for less(5 for $75ishfrom a retailer). Not that the one put is not from the original giveaway.

Tough call...the Padron however, seems like it's more rare. Maybe, maybe not?

This is going to be one of those calls that's up to the pass host. :D :p

Yup!

True but they were only offered at that price with a box purchase from the Don Carlos line. I don't know if that makes a difference but thought I'd add.

The Padron may not have an MSRP but I know when they had them at the Outlaw, they were for sale and not a give away cigar. At the Padron event last May I believe they had about 150 of them available they sold them for $35 each. Again, this is just one event, so others may have a different experience. As far as rarity, they are only available at events attend by Jorge Padron, but from what I've gathered it seems like these are showing up at more and more events he attends.

As far as the Love Story, I think it definitely seems to be much more rare than the Familia Reserva. I guess my question would be, exactly what is Jim putting and taking for each other? Are we looking at these puts/takes as 1 for 1, or as a whole? 1 for 1 I don't think the PFR and the Love Story match up, however as a whole I think Jim's puts exceed his takes.

I'd be happy with the Taboda.

Trades, imo, are always looked at 1 to 1 unless pass rules say otherwise (culebras are an odd exception). So, he's taking the PFR (sweet acronym!) and taking the Love Story. I mean, the Toboada sits in the back of your mind as "holy crap!" but you should not let it influence your opinion on a 1 for 1 PFR -> Love Story.

I'm also a novice when it comes to a P/T of this nature... but from what I've been able to research the P/T seems fair enough. But like Greg said I think it may come down your call Jeff. I'm personally fine with these.

Looking at it that way, my opinion(and my dad has a saying about opinions) is that the rarity of the Love Story does not make up the $15 price difference with the PFR.

only 275 Opus Love Stories have been released at $20 a piece, making it obviously rare and quite pricey.

Bear in mind this is only the number from the original release on CF. If you take into account the 500 that were released in the CFCF 22's as well as the additional boxes Gary mentioned that were available around the holidays, that puts the total # available somewhere around 875 at least. But if you use those numbers which decrease the rarity, you simultaneously increase the msrp somewhat because of the avg. $/stick in the CFCF 22's..... then you have a real quagmire. This is a tough one and I think Greg's right that this is one of those that is to be left to the pass host.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have any numbers at all on the PFR(sweet acronym :sign:) as far as total number produced?

We are talking this thing to death. I Personally think its fair but I am sure someone could make the argument otherwise. It could go either way depending on your point of view so its up to the host to decide. Lets be honest, its a win win regardless of what happens. Carry on.

Wow! I am glad this is getting the conversation it is and makes for a great pass. Just for the record I am proposing the FFLS for the PFR :).

Jim

Edit: To say the FFLS is one of the original ones from the email lottery on CF.

FFLS for PFR? I'm not quite sure about that one personally. Taboada for PFR is interesting, though. Bottom line in my opinion is, the best two of Jim's puts are a good match for the two takes, and the third is a bonus. No problem here from my perspective. Good on you, Jim!

Those P/T look all good to me, nice plays Jim (addy in profile)

To my knowledge, this is and isn't true. The 5pks were sold by Tampa Sweethearts with the requirement of a don carlos box, however, I believe the were offered to CF members without the requirement of an additional box purchase. If it's a cigar from the original 5ct. box, you're looking at a $20 stick from CF and 15 per stick from Tampa (but with the other large purchase required). However, it's a $40+ stick if it's released in the Opus 22 sets. If you consider that there were a LOT more released in the OPUS 22 sets, That would really drive the average up.

Opus 22 Sets: $43.18/ stick (500 cigars)
Original 5ct. boxes: $20/ Stick (250 Cigars)
Lets guess that this retailer probably had about 20 boxes. $15/ stick (100 cigars)

~850 Cigars made to date

Averaging those prices, you get on Average $33.05 per stick (Rather, this would be an average price one would expect to pay in order to obtain a single cigar).

But also you have to consider rarity here. One of the biggest issues in high end passes is that at some point, cigars are so outrageously "rare" that MSRP is not so much a factor as overall production and future attainability. We aren't sure if we will see future releases of the Love Story in a 22 set or not, but knowing the reason that they were released (to commemorate an anniversary in the Fuente Family), I don't see this being released again in the future...since the were for a "special occasion."

Ultimately, it's up to the host. If the PFR's were sold at one time for $35, then we're looking at a less than $2 MSRP difference between two very rare cigars. I would definitely say that Jim has left the pass better than he found it, and in terms of rarity, didn't take anything from the pass. I'd give it a  ....though I'm going to pester him and try to trade for that PFR!!! :whistling: :sign:

The Love Story isn't from the CF Opus 22 set or it would have been noted, thus you can't say the stick is worth $43 or even average it out with the regular production to get the $33 Jake noted . Regardless of how many PFR's have been produced, they're not available for the general public, only at Padron event at which Jorge is attended and then sold for $35 a piece. Maybe if the Love Story was 2 years discontinued then I'd let this trade go, but if this were my pass, I would have to veto it. This is purely my view on the matter though.

I'm only chiming in because Jeff asked for varying opinions.

Takes
22) Padrón Reserva de la Familia No. 44
63) Partagas Série D No. 4 '06

Puts
68) Opus X Love Story
69) Partagas Seleccion Privada No 1 OSU Feb 2002
70) Taboada Robusto Largo 2005

:) About time a super high end stick is on the chopping block. Obviously, a swap like that needs to input from more than one person, so let's hear it fellas! Number 2 is obviously good and generous. Might I add insanely generous on the Taboada, Jim!

Some background info on his first trade:
Per this link, only 275 Opus Love Stories have been released at $20 a piece, making it obviously rare and quite pricey.
The Padron Family has never been released and you can only get it a Padron event or dinner. You basically have to purchase some Padron and then get it handed to you or purchase them from the Padrons.

Let's hear some input! I'm quite obviously leaning towards !

Based on my very limited experience I'd say thumbs up to the trade.

Edit to add: I don't think you can factor the Opus 22 Love Story price into the mix as it is inflated due to the charitable nature of the offering.
