The Cheap Cigar Holy Grail!

I think I've found my new cheap cigar Holy Grail! I recently picked up a box of Padron Fumas from MD Cigars (www.mdcigars.com). These little guys are a modest 44x6 1/2" by my measurement -- and cost an even more modest $36.81 per box of 25 ($1.47).

From what I've been able to find from searching here and other cigar sites, these are generally only sold in the Florida area and are a short filler cigar made from the leavings of other smokes in the Padron line.

I've smoked my share of Consuegras, but have found the more I've smoked cigars, the less partial I was to the taste profile of the ERDM/Punch cigar of which the Consuegras are seconds. Thus, I set off to find a new cheap daily/yardgar smoke. I have always been partial to cigars with Nicaragua leaf filler. One of my all time favor smokes is just about anything from Padron. I've tried the '26 and '64 as well as the 2000, 3000, 5000 and 6000. The '26 was certainly my favorite, but I find that I like the 3k and 5k as a solid go-to cigar that doesn't break the bank.

I sat down to smoke my first Fuma with some trepidation, thinking my latest discovery might just be a bust. Well, I'm happy to say my time with the Fuma was time well spent! What a find! Granted, this is a cheap cigar. I'm not here trying to make a Cadillac out of a Kia. Nonetheless, I have to recommend this smoke to anyone looking for a nice flavorful cigar, but doesn't want to rob their humi of a pricier stick.

I think this cigar is best described as about 80-90% of the experience of the regular Padron line. Its got that characteristic Nic taste with a full flavor. It really satisfies the jones for a full tasty cigar that I was left wanting for after a Consuegra.

Now, the downsides to the Fuma. As you might expect for a $1.50, this cigar is rough. I think they'd definitely benefit from some time sleeping. And, they look rough around the edges as well. This is no beauty queen -- from the twist on the cap to the folded over leaf around the foot (rather than a clean cut). Despite that, they smoke real well. Plenty of aromatic smoke, excellent draw and a good (not great) burn.

Overall, I think I've found my new cheap date. She might not be pretty, but she definitely satisfies. :p

I'm surprised they even had them. I spoke to Rudy Padron once and he said they were only sold here in Florida. Hell, only in Little Havana even. I saw an interview where Jose Padron said that it was there way of paying back their original clientele, the old men of Little Havana.

My favorite cheap smoke for sure. Down here, they are 80 cents. :D

Cigar.com has had them for $1.77 ($44) for some time now, but I couldn't bring myself to spend that knowing they were selling for $1 or less in Little Havana.

Ricmac25, would you consider picking up and shipping a box for a BOTL?

I am a huge fan of Padron also Mojo. Might I suggest you try out Sancho Panza and Sancho Panza Double Maduro. Although Honduran cigars, they both include Nicaraguan filler (and flavor). You can get them for just a bit more ($40/20) and they are all long filler.

I get the 2000M for ~$65/box and the Sancho Panza Double Maduro Quixote for $42/ box. I have been on a quest for the same holy grail as apparently you are (a $1 cigar that looks, burns, and tastes like a Padron '26 :) ) Lately I have been begging everyone to trade me their cheap maddies, and have made some trading buds in the process.

Thanks for the review, I am definitely going to have to try those Fumas.

Mojo beat me to it. I've been trying to write a review for those all morning. I had my first last night. For the most part, I completely agree with Mojo. Sure they look a little rough, but (IMHO) most Padrons do.

I love them!

These are really nice cigars -- I smoked one that RicMac sent me -- apparently they are made from the scraps of Padróns other cigar lines... there's always some tobacco left over after making a long filler cigar like a 1926/1964 or the mille series... so it goes into the Fumas. Nice smokes, especially for the price.

Fumas are a great cigar. There is a simlar cigar made by Padron called Cazadore. Fortunately I p/u a box of each before I moved from Ft Lauderdale.

The Fumas cost $0.90ea & the Cazadore $0.75ea. Amazing smokes that I would put up against most $5 cigars.

If you can find them they are worth trying

Fumas are awesome. At the shop in Chattanooga TN I go to, they have been out for two weeks. I have one left in my humidor, but have promised it to a friend. What will I do. They also go for about two bucks here! You lucky jerks for getting them cheaper. :sneaky:

Cuba Aliados makes a Cazadore, too, that is delicious for about a buck a smoke. Same thing as Moki explained, short filler from their other cigars. Still good ash and usually even smoke. You can get them at JR's or Mom's. I've never bought them online, just when they have them in store in Jersey.

They aren't in stock down here either. Padron is waiting on a shipment.
