For me, one of life's simple pleasures is a great cigar with a great cup of coffee in the AM outside, watching the sun come up and listening to the sounds of the neighborhood as the day begins. Just finished an exceptional morning with what I think is my absolute favorite "AM with coffee" cigar - a Padron 1964 Anniversary Principe. Maduro or Natural wrapper, they get my "best of the best" vote for this paring.
Now, there are others I consider great choices for this occasion;
- HdM duDepute
- Cohiba Siglo I
- LaLuna Serie R Colada
- of course, the Padron 26 #35
...these are all good, very good, actually, but the Principe stands out, IMHO. While the #35 is a fantastic smoke, they are almost a little small to get through a nice big cup (or two) of coffee, and are of course more expensive than their '64 cousins. I enjoy them all but the Principe gets my vote.
Today's smoke was a Natural wrapper version. The mechanics of the smoke are so good they are almost boring; the cut - flawless. The draw - perfect; open, smooth, but not so open as to cause concern. Put the torch to it and it was a little on the hot side for the first couple draws but that quickly subsided and settled down into the classic Anniversary flavor profile. So smooth, rich, and tasty it's hard to imagine a better paring in the early AM. The Anniversary profile is classic; rich in coffee, perhaps a hint of chocolate, and a nutty complexity I always enjoy. Hook that up with a cup of great, fresh, black coffee and I can't imagine a better 45 mins spent to get the day off to a great start. The Principe is just the right size to "get it done" but no so big as to require a longer investment in time. Just right, and just wonderful.... :thumbs: You bet I nubbed this little beauty.
All I can add is that if you've never had the pleasure of coffee and a cigar in the AM, give it a shot. It's a small indulgence I really look forward to on the weekends.
