The best AM coffee cigar in the universe

For me, one of life's simple pleasures is a great cigar with a great cup of coffee in the AM outside, watching the sun come up and listening to the sounds of the neighborhood as the day begins. Just finished an exceptional morning with what I think is my absolute favorite "AM with coffee" cigar - a Padron 1964 Anniversary Principe. Maduro or Natural wrapper, they get my "best of the best" vote for this paring.

Now, there are others I consider great choices for this occasion;

- HdM duDepute
- Cohiba Siglo I
- LaLuna Serie R Colada
- of course, the Padron 26 #35

...these are all good, very good, actually, but the Principe stands out, IMHO. While the #35 is a fantastic smoke, they are almost a little small to get through a nice big cup (or two) of coffee, and are of course more expensive than their '64 cousins. I enjoy them all but the Principe gets my vote.

Today's smoke was a Natural wrapper version. The mechanics of the smoke are so good they are almost boring; the cut - flawless. The draw - perfect; open, smooth, but not so open as to cause concern. Put the torch to it and it was a little on the hot side for the first couple draws but that quickly subsided and settled down into the classic Anniversary flavor profile. So smooth, rich, and tasty it's hard to imagine a better paring in the early AM. The Anniversary profile is classic; rich in coffee, perhaps a hint of chocolate, and a nutty complexity I always enjoy. Hook that up with a cup of great, fresh, black coffee and I can't imagine a better 45 mins spent to get the day off to a great start. The Principe is just the right size to "get it done" but no so big as to require a longer investment in time. Just right, and just wonderful.... You bet I nubbed this little beauty.

All I can add is that if you've never had the pleasure of coffee and a cigar in the AM, give it a shot. It's a small indulgence I really look forward to on the weekends.

Best Regards - B.B.S.

Very nice review, BBS. You've captured the Anniversary profile perfectly for me. I often stick to the larger sizes but now I'm motivated to give the tiny sticks a shot. I find the Sig I a bit too assertive for a morning coffee stick, at least when young.

Well done!

Principe is a great smoke. Excellent review.

Nah, best morning coffee cigar is the LGC Figurado Reserva Felicias Maddie...

Doesn't carry a big price tag and it's a beautiful and tasty maduro.

But, that's not to say 64 Principes aren't amazing as well.

After dinner I like a cup of Folgers Chocolate Silk and a Hemingway Signature. Don't laugh and don't forget I have no tastebuds!

My faviorute am stick, and coffee....Opus xxx, and Starbucks fresh ground Sumatra....of course, I dont hit eh xxx in the morning very often...just on special occasions..

Or, when I have spent the night on the couch..... :whistling:

I agree! I got ten of them for a very good price and smoked a couple with morning coffee. Wonderful experience and much cheaper than this morning's La Aurora Cien Anos Belicoso, too. ;)

My fav morning cigars:

IP Brickk
IT SF Toro Mad
LVH Early Years Silencio
AF Short Story
Mayorga Robusto
Oliva Grand Maduro Robusto

so far...

Punch Rare Corojo and a large cup of regular coffee from a coffee/donut vending cart for $1.25

Very nice review Tom. I just might have to get a PAM out of the humi in the morning to start the day off.

Great review, Tom! I have to agree with you on all your morning choices and a couple more that I enjoy (at times) are the Party Short and SCdH Principe. If given a choice, I always go for the maduros over the naturals. Of course...what I may smoke in the morning can sometimes be determined by what I've eaten the night before (and how full I still am when I wake up).

As far as coffee goes: I flip between Graffeo Dark Roast and Coffee Bean Sumatra. Lately I've been on a Chai tea kick with a box I bought at Mariage Freres in Paris.

Sorry for the late response to this post, but I was just about to write a morning smoke post this morning as I get ready to head out on the deck and then I used the 'search' function and found this one. :D

Good morning, Chris - !!

I was just about to....step outside with a PAN Principe and a cup 'o joe and saw that this thread had been bumped.....

Another little flavor bomb is the Trini Reyes....but, I'm sticking with my original pick. Of all of them, and of course they are all good ones, the Padron still gets my double thumbs up as the "best".

....no accounting for taste, right...??....

Best Regards - B.B.S.

Good morning to you too, Tom!

I agree that the Reyes is a good one as well. I usually keep them (and the Sig I's) for times when I have guests as I really don't like torching those puppies when I'm smoking alone. It's fun to smoke the 'higher-end' stuff with a friend and talk about how damn good it is (or even better... the smile and enjoy without a word).

Enjoy that coffee!!! Me and my tea are heading to the deck! Now I got to think quick and pick a victim. :D

edited to add: my victim this morning was a really delicious little RyJ Coronitas Cedro :)

Thank you BBS..... I have to say, as enticing as the cigar sounded, your description of the the stillness of the morning and the sun waking up from its night rest was equally well done... Have a great day...
