The 4th of July is the day of reckoning for smokers

On the 4th of July the voters will decide if the state of Bavaria will have a 100% smoking ban or not.

At the moment you can still smoke in some bars and beer tents and cigar lounges.

If the proposal gets voted in, that will no longer be the case and all the cigar lounges will be forced to close their doors, including all the Casa del Habanos.

Right now the Ja/Nein votes are almost dead even, pray brothers pray.

It'd certainly be a shame that those businesses would be foreced to close their doors over a smoking ban vote. If the ban passes, hopefully the existing businesses will be allowed to continue.

I know it's a generalization, but I always pictured Germans as being level headed and logical, if not unemotional. Kind of like Spock with a speech impediment. Sounds like they might be as flighty and emotional as we are. Hope it turns out well for you Shawn, keep us posted. The way things are going we're all going to have to move to Indonesia and hang out with this kid.

All in favor of Jon getting diaper/respirator duties?

WOW! While not quite the same degree, July 4th is the last day people can smoke in bars in WI. Our statewide smoking ban starts July 5th.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Wurm, I sincerely hope level heads will prevail and that silliness will be voted down.

Well, I was thinking about PCS'ing to Germany next year...
guess I will wait and see

Well only 37.7% of the population showed up and voted today and from that 37.7% 61% voted for the total smoking ban in Bavaria.

So on the first of August all the cigar lounges in Bayern will be out of business. And a bunch of bars will be going out of business as well.

The best thing was the asshole who started this mess saying "The people have decided!" Yeah right asshole, you mean 61% from 37.7% right?

"THEY CAME FIRST for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

THEN THEY CAME for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

THEN THEY CAME for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up."

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
C.S. Lewis
Its my favorite quote.

Now in today's paper the Green Party said that if Bavaria has a total smoking ban then they see no reason it shouldn't be that way for the rest of Germany.
