Hi All,

I have been reading a lot on this site for the last few months and posted an intro a few weeks ago. There is so much great info here, what a great forum. I still have a few things that I either have not been able to find with searches, or have found conflicting info on. Was wondering if the group would mind helping me out...

1. I live in Southern California and it's been HOT here this summer. Finally now it's starting to cool off, but I still have some difficulty keeping the temp of my desk top humi down. I don't really want to run the AC all day long just for my little box of sticks, so I'm looking for an alternative way of keeping it cool. I saw stuff about "blue ice". Are those the square blue freezer things that you put inside a cooler when you go to the beach/picnic? Has anyone tried placing a small one, or just a plastic bag with a couple of cubes INSIDE their desktop humi? I'm thinking I can wrap it in a towel so it doesn't get my gars wet.

2. My local smoke shop owner says I'm overly concerned about the temp. He said unless it gets up to 80F/80RH, there's not really a risk of getting the bugs. I am able to usually keep it under 75 degrees, but when I check the min/max setting on the thermometer/hygrometer, it says it has gotten to 80. This would have only been for a short period, but it still got up there. Also, is keeping the humidity in line more of an art or a science? I just bought a brand new beautiful Siglo 300ct desktop (which is already full--you guys aren't kidding about this addiction stuff), and I am still constantly fucking around with it to keep the humidity around 70. Take the devices out, put them back in, take one out and leave the other in, etc., etc., etc. Am I obsessing or is the local guy right telling me to chill?

3. Is the purpose of a cooler-dor to keep your smokes cool (and humidified), or is it just a good cheap alternative to larger cabinet type humi's? I already am planning my next purchase for this hobby. I'm thinking of a fridge-a-door though, due to the warm SoCal weather.

Thanks all, for your input, and for making this such a great spot on the web.

Coolidor=cheap humidor

Also do some searching for a wine coolidor.

Yes you are worring to much about things. Smoke a cigar and relax..

Yup .... I would go with the fridegador as well, actually that is what I am using.

Thanks NoCal. You need a fridgedor even up there... Are you in the Bay area? Which fridgeador do you use?

I'm in San Jose, and it does stay warm here in the summer so a fridgeador really does help maintain my collection. I picked up a small wine cooler from Sears, tweaked the thermostat and loaded it with beads, works great for me! Others here have done the same with a similar same unit but have done a much better job of modding it.

Just be sure to do your research about keeping the RH where it needs to be using a fridge to keep your smokes cool. I've read or heard that cooling units in fridges suck alot of the moisture out of the air, so you need to be aware/careful about that.

Do you place your desktop Humi into the Fridgeadoor?

Nope, just cigars in their original boxes. I place my nice desktop humidors in a antique curio cabinet.

Is the antique curio cabinet temperature controlled? There isn't an issue of keeping the desktops cool in it?

Nah, the curio cabinet is just a really cool piece of furniture that really shows off my humidors well  . I did read somepplace that keeping your humidors in such a cabinet did help in some way but I'm not really sure if that's true. Again, I just keep them in there because it looks really nice.

I'm not too concerned with keeping the desktop cigars as cool as those aren't the sticks that I am necessarily ageing.

Blue ice are those deals that go in your lunchbox. They work just fine, just make sure to wrap them in paper towel in the off chance they might sweat on your smokes. Try moving (i know this hurts) your humidor somewhere away from heat sources like windows or the where the ac doesn't cool well. As for humidity your cigar is a whole hell of a lot tougher than we give em credit for. I just bought a digital hygrometer for my humi after 3 years and found to my horror that i was down to like 50% humidity. Smokes burned fine and tasted fine and didn't crumble but way too low. Made adjustments and all is well at 70-72% humidity. I can't think of a better example of the toughness of cigars than my own experience.

Now I'll never be asked to join a pass! Don't tell anybody. My bombs will be returned! haha

Got a basement? Put the humi in the coolest place in the house. I have a cement slab w/o a basement it is 5 to 10 degrees cooler the the ambiant air. I put my dry box on the floor in the summer.
