Hey Experts....need your suggestions.

Im getting a Cabinet humidor at the end of March. I cant wait ! :)
But because I live in a apartment, I have no control over when the air conditioning or heat, so on occasion the temps in the humidor will get a little too high for my liking.

Heres the question:
Is there anything I can put in the cabinet to keep a steady temperature year round?
The cabinet does come with 2 outlets, so I can use one if need be?
I dont mind spending some cash on this, so any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks......>Emil

I am in the process of putting one of these in my humi. I will be powering it with this.
I am going to use an elaborate control system, because I can get the parts cheap, and I do that crap for a living. However you could control quite well using one of the many available residential type thermostats. You will need to use relays to handle the current load.

You will need to install fans on both heat sinks, I would also install these safety devices just in case.

Hope that helps you or gives you some ideas.

Next time you're in CT, there are some high-end sticks and single malt in your future if you put a few of those in my humidors!
I would try it, but would likely cause a terrible fire, losing my house, my cigars, and my fiance in one fell swoop.

My recommendation for the cheapest and best temp controlled cabinet is the 440 Cigar unit from www.vinotemp.com. I have their 700 model which I believe is discontinued and it has performed like a champ for over 5 years.

Yeah I wish. The other cabinet has already been preordered anyways.
Theres gotta be something out there that can do this for me.
Im gonna shoot an email to the Mythbuster guys, they can pretty much build anything. :D

Any other responses to the temperature control issue would be appreciated by some of us lurkers :D

Like Tommy and Emil, I've also got a Connosieur cabinet preordered to be delivered this month (crosses fingers and knocks on wood). Summers here are very hot and dry so I'm a little nervous about maintaining a temperature below 75-80F without some sort of help (electric help that is) :)

In a perfect world I would have ordered an Aristocrat THC, but baby steps for me

So...any more information would be appreciated! Thanks guys.

I can't seem to find the 440 Cigar unit on their site. Is it less expensive than the similar Avallo or Aristocrat units?

AH, got it: http://www.vinotemp.com/440-tdg-shelves-p-366.html

$3,300 bucks. It is huge, though. Easily 3 or 4 times the volume of the 2400 dollar Aristocrat I am looking at.

Since I don't have central air I put in a window unit and keep the whole room cooler. That should work for you too.

Hmm my fathers an electrician, I wonder if we couldn’t build one of those Thermal coolers rigs, betcha we could make a mint sellin em on ebay too.

From the last thread we had about this, someone recommended using the "blue ice" thingys. Just replace it daily.

By the way Gandolf, if you wanted to rig one of those things up like you were talking about, I would be more than happy to compensate you for your time! It sounds like you could move a few more of those based on the interest in these threads.

Plug 'n Play would be right up my alley, also :)

I have yet to install mine. I just have not had time to get the hole cut in the humi, and "git r dun". I have put all of the parts together to do a "dry run" and it works exactly as I expect.

As for putting these together for others, well, the control system I am using is very expensive. I do building automation for a living, so I have access to parts and such. To buy them at retail would run upwards of $1000. Yea, not cheap, but gnats ass control ;)

A residential thermostat like your house has will work fine. The control is not as exact (the temperature may swing by 3 or 4 degrees) The wiring for a residential type thermostat would be fairly simple.

I would be happy to draw up a wiring diagram and answer questions.
