Temp. in Humidor going up...

A couple of days ago we had a heat wave down here in southern California were it reached over 100F. I check my humidor and for a couple of days it read well above 80 degrees (85-87), and it is never under the sun. Only thing I remember reading about temperature is that it should be 70 or below to avoid tobacco beetles eggs from hatching, if there are any in the cigars (not sure if this is true).

So my question is: Is it really bad to have the temp. go above 70? And if it is, what can I do to help keep it around 70 during the summer time?

Thanks

There are a couple of issues with going above 70 degrees. As you said, tobacco beetle eggs will hatch above 70. I believe from an article they still can hatch at 70, but chances are slim to none that it would happen. If you take it up to 80 for a short period but bring it back down and consistently have it at 70 degrees you should be fine. The other thing that can happen with change in temperature is changing in humidity. The general rule is to make sure that you keep your temperature and humidity as stable as possible for best aging and safety of your smokes.

The general rules for keeping your smokes cool is simple. Keep them in a basement or if you don't have one then put them in a cool closet. Keep them out of direct sunlight. Some people have experimented with some cooling compartments I believe, but I do not have any first hand experience.

I know your pain. Last July my ac went in my house during a heat wave. My place was like 90+ degrees inside and all of my humidors where in the 80s. for about 4 days. A couple of days with temps are ok. Think how hot is gets in a UPS truck when they're shipped. But, anymore than a few days and I would get a little concerned.
