Today I smoked my first Tatuaje cigar. I bought a sampler of the different Tatuajes, both red and brown bands, they arrived a few days ago. I put them in my new humidor and got them nice and ready to smoke.
I chose to start with the Nobles, which is one of the red banded Tatuajes by Pete Johnson. The cigar is Nicaraguan, filler, wrapper, binder. The Nobles is a medium body cigar, 5 inches in length with a ring gauge of 50. Unlike what I have read about the other Tatuajes (brown band), this isn't a strong cigar. From the time I lit the cigar to the time I finished it, the cigar produced a very consistent creamy flavor, very smooth. There were no harsh flavors, just a slight spice and great tasting cigar.
Some may find this hard to believe, but I am paring this cigar up with a Montecristo #4 (ISOM), although sized slightly different, these cigars are very comparable. After smoking the Tatuaje, I would be just as likely to grab it then I would grab one of my #4s. Price wise, the Tatuaje has the edge, although maybe not as prestigious as the Montecristo, if Tatuaje keeps producing quality cigars like this one, it will be soon become a classic smoke.
The only negative I found with the Nobles was the cigar wasn't rolled perfectly, it had a slight off shape, which caused it to burn slightly uneven, and the ash was actually crooked, it didn't affect the taste or pleasure of the smoke though. The wrapper and cigar smell great, coloring is nearly perfect.
After this cigar, I'm anxious to smoke my other Tatuajes. Next up, I think I'll switch to the stronger brown banded cigars to see if they live up to the hype as well.
Anyone looking for a great smoke, Cuban in quality, pick one of these up.
