Tatuaje Gran Cojonu
Size: 6 1/2" x 60 rg (Huge?)
Wrapper: Nicaraguan
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Strength: Medium - Full
This is the first time I have smoked one of these monsters. I originally bought one for Greg as part of a bomb I sent him, and I remember when picking it up at the shop thinking to myself, "Sweet Jesus this thing looks mean...I need one for ME!". Well, on a recent trip to the same shop, I picked up another one for myself along with a handful of other hard to find Tats such as the RC184 and the various Cojonu years. This thing is a very intimidating cigar, I honestly was a bit nervous firing it up as I had not eaten a really substantial meal before hand. I only had a cold glass of Coca Cola (the best cola!) to pair it with.
Pre-Light
Initial inspection only increased my nervousness: this cigar is a beast. The unbanded wrapper was very oily, and featured a huge, perfect triple seam cap as well as a partially covered foot. The cigar had a nice heft to it, and was solid feeling with just a very slight spring to it when squeezed. The scent on the wrapper was a wonderfully sweet aroma of tobacco and almost a brown sugar scent. The construction is beautiful, and the large size only makes it more apparent.
Burn & Draw
The initial light was a bit difficult due to the sheer size of the foot, and the covered foot did cause the burn to start off a bit irregular. Once the burn progressed about a quarter inch though, it straightened out and stayed almost razor sharp for the majority of the smoke, requiring no touch ups. I remember Greg saying he punched his and I thought he had stated the draw was almost a little on the loose side, though I couldn't remember for certain. I decided I would follow suit, and used the largest punch I have, which resulted in a comically small hole in the huge cap. Surprisingly enough, the draw was spot on, though I was a bit worried that I may have an issue with tar build up resulting from the small hole, but luckily this proved not to be the case. The salt and pepper ash held strong until let go every inch.
Flavor Profile
The pre-light draw was sweet and had a faint taste of tobacco to it that caused my mouth to start watering. Once the nice peppery blast from the covered foot subsided, I was a bit surprised at how much the spice backed down to a good medium level. The flavors were excellent, filled with notes of leather, cocoa, coffee and rich tobacco all culminating in a rich, mile long finish. There was not much complexity to it, simply a solid array of tastes that were all just as strong as the next, and the black pepper spice in the nose and mouth was perfect throughout, never becoming too strong. Purging was not needed once, as not a bit of harshness or bitterness reared its head through the duration. Delicious!
Overall Impression
The large size of this cigar is a bit daunting at first, giving the false impression that is an ass kicker. Instead, this cigar was a very, very enjoyable full flavored behemoth that lasted for just a bit over two hours. One definitely has to devote some time to this cigar, and I would love to pair it with a good hefeweizen. I rarely smoke anything larger than a toro, but I will certainly be keeping a few of these in my humidor. I'd love to revisit this cigar with some age on it.
(And yes, the dog won the boxing match with my brother.)
