Tatuaje "The Frank"
Size: 7 5/8" x 49 rg
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Strength: Medium - Full

After much searching and begging, I managed to procure three of these cigars which I had intended to smoke on Halloween last year with my brother Nick and buddy Shant, however the little "Frank Fest" fell through. Originally I was going to smoke an Opus today to celebrate the first day of the new year, but seeing as both my brother and Shant were over, it seemed like a good time as any to slay a few monsters!

Pre-Light

I'd have to say that the appearance of these cigars is outstanding it that the size, wrapper and general construction all comes together to make for an intimidating looking stick. The wrapper has a dark, chocolate brown color to it, along with the very recognizable broadleaf maduro texturing with a touch of oils. The cap is a great looking Cuban style triple seam that is coupled with a foot that looks to be loosely bunched, yet the squeeze test says different with a solid feel to the cigar.

Draw & Burn

Once punched, I found a perfect cold draw that once lit had a consistent, perfect resistance to it for the remainder of the cigar. The burn was a bit wavy, requiring correction periodically throughout the duration of the smoke, and left behind an ash that was dark gray in an almost Cuban like way.

Flavor Profile

The pre-light draw carried on it a very faint, slightly sweet taste that I recognized as the broadleaf, and left a saltiness on the lips. Once lit, the first half inch was very, very full flavored with a nice pepper to it and a background of raw tobacco. After that first half inch passed, the flavor backed down a little bit but still remained full, and the pepper faded into near nothingness. I began to pick up alternating flavors of worn leather, sweet tobacco, cedar, earth and vanilla. Light chocolate notes came and left every few minutes as well, adding to the complexity of the flavor profile. I was surprised at the fullness of the smoke and tastes, both which coated the palate providing for a very nice finish. The pepper that was so prominent when first fired up was making itself known in the nose when I exhaled the smoke via the sinuses, but otherwise was nonexistent.

Overall Impression

I'd have to say that this was quite a solid smoke, and a bit different than what I am used to in terms of Pete Johnson stuff. The strength itself started off at a medium level, but by the end both my brother and I were feeling a bit woozy, which told me it had reached a very full strength. I very much enjoyed this cigar, however I do admit that it did not blow me away or make it to the top of my favorite list. I did have a great time kicking back outside with my brother, Shant and my girlfriend Deanna, which to me makes for a perfect smoke. On a side note, I discovered that Moosehead Lager makes for a great cigar beer, as it is crisp, light, has a clean finish and a good amount of carbonation that scrubs the palate nicely providing for a great cigar drink.
