Tatuaje Especiales
Size: 7 1/2 x 38 rg Lancero
Wrapper: Nicaragua Corojo 99
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Strength: Medium - Full
What a beautiful summer day here in sunny SoCal! I had checked out a new cigar shop last week as I had read that they were an authorized Tatuaje retailer, and of course I left the place with a handful of cigars. Among the various Pete Johnson sticks were El Triunfadors, La Riquezas, Cabaiguan Guapos, and one single, lonely Especiales. I had selected this one last when shopping, and more on a whim that with prior intentions. I really knew nothing about it, as I hadn't read any reviews on it, but I figured if I was going to be trying an El Triunfador I might as well try another of Pete's lanceros.
On inspecting the long lancero, I was unsurprised at the quality of the construction, as I have come to expect this from any of the Pete Johnson cigars. The silky soft chocolate brown wrapper was covered in a patchwork of thin veins, featured light oils, and smelled of sweet tobacco. The foot was well bunched and complimented by a beautiful pigtail cap finished with a triple seam. I found a few hard spots along the length when squeezed, which left me concerned that the cigar may very well be plugged. I clipped the head and found a very tight prelight draw that had a spicy sweetness that lingered on the lips. On toasting the foot and taking a few puffs, I was surprised at the mild amount of pepper spice on exhaling through the nose. I was instead finding flavors of chocolate, nutmeg, and a very slight taste of pepper on the palate. This was followed by a delicious, rich and leathery finish that lasted quite long. Excellent! I was finding the draw to work perfectly with this cigar, as it was forcing me to sip the cigar with short, shallow draws. The amount of smoke that was being produced was enormous, which was very nice as I hadn't expected that with the shallow draws. The burn was sharp and incredibly slow, revealing a very light gray ash that fell if not let go every inch.
Throughout the entire length of this cigar, I found the flavors to constantly change from the ones previously mentioned, to toasted nuts, vanilla bean, coffee, and rich tobacco. I found it to be very complex, and very, very enjoyable. I've not smoked many lanceros, this actually being my third, but I now see why they are so sought after. This was a very good cigar that I will most certainly be buying more of. I did have to purge once as well as relight, but I attribute that to me waiting too long in between draws. I also experienced a slight bitterness towards the end, though not enough to be unpleasant. Despite those few flaws, I would have to say that this cigar rates high up there among Pete's other sticks that I have smoked. I hope the El Triunfador is even better!
