Surprising small smoke

OK, I have mentioned these things before.
El Rey Del Mundo (NC) Cafe Au Lait.

I bought my last box about 6 months ago at JR for about 28 bucks. Yes, a tad over a dollar a cigar. They are small. 4.5 X 35 to be exact.
I like small cigars, as I have two 45 minute-an hour drives every day. These are a little short for my commute, but I still keep them around.

I went into the humi this morning to grab a few cigars for the day, and decided to reach into a box of them that I have had for roughly 2.5 to 3 years, I think. No kidding, one had plume. nice little crystals, evenly distributed. I smoked it on the way to work, and boy, was it good. Better than they are fresh, or even with a year on them. (Though, i must admit, they are even quite tasty fresh...but they are from JR, so give them a few weeks to dry out int he humi).

My usual short smokes for the drive are PAM Principes, 1926 #35, Short Stories with some age (Jim, I'll be calling you shortly for another box), Party shorts, and Boli PC's. So, for a 1 dollar cigar to impress me enough to be looking forward to another on the ride home, instead of smoking the Boli PC sitting next to it in the travel humi...well, it surprises me to say the least.

JR lists them as "medium-full", though I would say medium. They draw smoothly, with jsut enough resistence to feel like a "real cigar" despite their diminutive size. Big full mouthfulls of smoke. Burn is dead even. If smoked carefuly (not rushed) they stay cool, well behaved and tasty down tothe end, though if smoked too quickly, they are especcially vulnerable to all the shortcomings and issues that small cigars mgiht suffer from.

So, if you are in the market for inexpensive small smokes, and have some time to lay them down, give them a try! I hoppe you will be as pleasantly surprised as I have been

Sounds like a nice smoke. I am always looking for dollar smokes! :D Thanks for the tip!

Was the one you smoked,natural,maduro,oscuro....my apologies if I missed it in your review.

I love the ERD lines,I usually grab the robusto or the robusto larga. My friend gave me a tee pee looking on that wasnt bad but was natural and I prefer the oscuro's.
I agree about the ageing of ERD's,makes them so sweet,at least for the maduro/oscuro's.

Thanks for the review! :D

Thanks for the tip, Josh. Looks like these are in the same general size range as the panetelas and cadetes vitolas. And a whole lot cheaper than the other "real" cigars in this range.

I'll give 'em a try.

I just received a box for these (from TNT cigars for $20) and look forward to trying them out on my lunch break!

Right you are. I have not had a Cafe Noir. I am, however, about to order another Box of the Au Laits right now. I opened my last box this morning to see how they look and smell, as I have 5 left out of my last older box. For the price, they make a wonderful smoke for the drive to work, instead of an ISOM Demi Tasse or a Party short, which are both ownderful cigars, but 4 times the price. The ISOMs are a better drive HOME from work cigar, though...

An excellent observation, Josh!

These sticks also have a date code on the boxes. My box from TNT has 1-ENE 2005... so after some miraculous deduction, I came to the conclusion these were boxed in January of 2005 (impressive reasoning I know). A free year and a half of aging... I'll take that, and to top it off they are only 19.95 @ TNT, instead of 27 @ JR's.

Huh...intersting. I'll have to go home and look at my boxes. I never noticed that.

Thanks!

I noticed that too!

I also smoked a 2nd stick on my lunch break. These are so tasty and perfect for a 20 minute window. Very forgiving of over-smoking them and a great blend!

Boy these sound yummy! :)
