I went to Cuba in March and got hooked on cigars. Not actually addicted, but I just really liked them and felt that a cigar once and a while would be just awesome. So anyways I brought some back home and didn't store them right and they turned out bad. Then I fixed it and restored the moisture and it was better, but after a couple weeks it was just terrible. What I want to know is if I get a humidor and everything is working right how long can I keep it? Because I don't know when I can get them I planned on buying in bulk so whenever I wanted one I could grab one, but I don't want them all to get ruined after a certain time.
Thanks

There are tons of links and pinned threads that should answer most of your questions about proper cigar storage but to directly answer your question, a cigar will keep for decades in a properly maintained humidore. Like I said, read the pinned threads, search and read a lot and you will find the answers for your questions and the answers for issues you were never even aware of.

This community expects its new users to introduce themselves in the Introduce Yourself Here forum. So head over and tell us a little about yourself. :)

Wow I never knew they could stay good for that long. Thanks for the help, and yeah after you said that I went over and introduced myself.
Thanks for the help.

They will keep for decades, but most will have passed their peaks well before then. They may even taste a little musty.

Hell, I started reading and got hooked on Phonics!

Now I can't stop reading!

I think your humidity was either too low or too high (likely the latter) and that's what gave the terrible taste to your smoke. Learn about storing cigars in a stable environment and you will have a hobby that wil keep your cigars tasting great for a long time.

To give you an idea, you can still get pre-embargo cubans legally here in the USA. That's how long you can keep them. When you go to buy a humidor, find the biggest one you could want........then double the size. Trust me on this.

Humidor Minister and 4cbln3 are spot on. I used to keep mine at 70% RH, and found the cigars would have a tight draw and would taste bitter. I now keep them at 63-65% RH at 67-69F, and they smoke perfectly. Get a bigger humdior or vinotemp than you think you will need. I started with a 100ct desktop humidor, and quickly outgrew it. I now use an 18 bottle Vino, and am quickly outgrowing it as well. Go big!
