Sparky Anderson

Big fan of his watching the Big Red Machine growing up. I even followed the Tigers as my American League team when he was up there.

I grew up in Cincinnati in the age of the Big Red Machine. I saw so many games at Riverfront Stadium that I cannot begin to count them all. When I was a kid, I met so many of the Reds players that were on those great teams. I have autographed baseballs, books, programs and whatever else. My office is a baseball shrine. I only met Sparky Anderson a couple of times but those were quite memorable. He was a gentleman and seemed to have a great perspective on life.

If you ever have the chance to watch Sparky's interview about Game 6 of the 1975 World Series, take the time and watch it. I have it here somewhere but I cannot link it for you. In my opinion, you may never hear a more true expression of love for the game of baseball than Sparky's description of the game and the anxiety for Game 7. Good stuff.

My thanks to Sparky Anderson for his part in making me a fan of a great game. My thanks to Sparky Anderson for being a true role model in sports.

You will be missed, Sparky.

Tom Kelly relayed a story on radio today about Sparky Anderson. He said the most memorable advice he ever gave him as a manager is to recognize when you have a good team. He said, "When you have a good team, just sit on the bench and put your feet under you; you don't want to trip anyone on their way to the plate."

Baseball lost part of what makes it great today. He was a character with character.
