spanish cedar in fridge

Hey guys,

Bought some nice cedar from a site reccomended by one of you. Made some shelves and sided all the walls.
The rh was around 50% 12 hours after I did this. I opened a little jar of distilled and sprayed some beads a little.
Is this normal? Will is balance out to 65% if I just have a Little patience?

Providing you have a good seal in whatever you just built, the beads should equalize things out at 65%. How large of a humidor did you build? Are you sure the seal is good and you're not leaking humidity? Do you have enough beads for the size you built?

Do some searches on humidor seasoning for some more information. :)

When you say "fridge". Do you mean you have it plugged in? Because if I am not mistaken the refrigeration unit will pull out the humidity level no matter how good of a seal you have IMO.

It is one of those 6.0 cu-ft. It has kept 65 great with the amount of beads ive got with out wood. I was just thinking that the wood might effect how much more or less beads I need. or with the wood, or it would suck the distilled water in or out of the beads?

Yeah spanish cedar is like a sponge when you first put it in. Anything dry and pourus will take moisture out of the air. Once the cedar is up to the humidity level itself your unit it should be fine.

Yeah... keep that extra glass/container of distilled water in there so it can soak up as much as it needs. :)
 
I put a couple more bowls of distilled in the humi for the wood t absorb(Its around 50% this morning)

Do you guys think that the wood will take it from the distilled first or the cigars?

Yep, this thread is less without some pics!

The new Spanish cedar is much more than slightly aromatic. It will absorb moisture and to a limited extent (compared to beads) will buffer the RH. Give it plenty to drink and a little time. Try to resist applying moisture directly to the wood.
 
So it sounds like from the post you have had a good two days of the 'fridge' being closed with some open containers of water in there. May I ask how big the humi is?

Also did you do anything to your cedar before putting it into the humi? For example let it sit in the oven at 250 for a little while? Just trying to get a mental picture for this humidor.

That's a lot of cedar. This is my opinion, wipe the wood with a damp cloth. Don't soak the wood, just dampen it. Now I don't recommend doing this to a humidor, but in the fase of a fridgedor I think you will be ok. Another very important point, run your hydrometer through the salt test and see what it reads. Nothing sucks more than cigars that split because of humidifying them too fast or too high.

I'd suggest you drill holes or cut holes or use a router to cut slats in your shelves to promote air flow.
