Some of you guys were right

Well, to my surprise, after following some of your guys' suggestions about bleeding the tank before refilling, the Colibri is back in business! How in the heck was I supposed to know this?? Glad you guys pointed this out so I don't throw out future torches when the remedy might be this simple.

youre not supposed to know this information :p if the lighter worked perfectly all the time id have nothing to do at work most of the time and colibri would go out of business :p
we work on more colibri's at work than id care to mention, people are sometimes amazed that we can bring them back from the dead.

oh another trick is to get a can of compressed air like you use to clean your keyboard and blow out the burners, pocket lint is the biggest problem most of these lighters have.

glad you got it working

That link for the DuPont Extend is a hell of a deal.

I have two Extends, one has now gone bad, the other still works fine. They have a great flame, only problem is the limited fuel capacity.

For my money my best torch lighter is the original Blazer, huge fuel tank and very dependable. If you want the best lighters bar none, the Corona Old Boy, DuPont, Davidoff and Dunhill flint lighters rule.

Colibri pretty much sucks as a lighter company, only worse one is Prometheus.

Thanks for tip, Outlaw. I'll give that a try as well. One thing that I have noticed is that although the Colibri is now working again, it's not quite as smooth of a torch as before. When I first got it, I was so impressed with it's constant smooth light, but now it occasionally "burps" during the light. Yeah I know, that's a terrible adjective to use here to describe what is happening, but I'm not sure how else to explain it.

Wow, $91! That might be a great deal, but man, to spend that kind of cash on a lighter would be awfully hard for me to do. Perhaps when my cash flow increases :)

Got 2 Colibri lighters. Had one 5 years and one 6 years. Both flawless in performance

I have about six Colibris, all purchased used on eBay. The only time they don't work is when they are out of fuel.

Browndevil and Jim - do both of you guys make sure to bleed your lighters before filling? Do either of you to what was suggested earlier; spray air (which is used on keyboards) onto the burners? Just wondering if you guys take care of your Colibri lighters any differently to get them to last that long.

I've had my Colibri for a little over a year. It worked great up until about 3 months ago. Then, I noticed that it would "act up" whenever I filled it. I noticed the "burp" that you mentioned and it sometimes wouldn't light at all for days at a time then it would suddenly work like a charm. Irritating!

Anyway, I struggled with this for about a month (mostly because it has a built-in punch that I love and it just cost too much to toss.) Then I did a search on the net and came across the instructions for bleeding it and filling it properly. Now, it works fine -- with an occassional burp. I'm going to incorporate the spray air idea as well, maybe that will eliminate the burp.

BTW, my Colibri was made in Korea...

If I had to go to another lighter, I'd probably try the triple jet model that Shibumi posted above. Costs about $13 with shipping. It does not have a built in punch, but I'd just invest in a $5 key chain punch. Not as handy, but what can you do?

Good luck with your's and let us know how it goes.

I've got 3 Colibris that I've bought over the years and they work fine. Oldest one I have is probably 3 years old. Just refill mine and they work as good as they did when they were new.

Darren

Well, since bleeding my Colibri, it is back to working. I've used it a lot the past couple of days and haven't had a single issue. I guess that has to be one of the keys to owning a Colibri (and probably any torch I would think). I'm going to get some of that air spray and see if that makes the flame light a little smoother like before. Nonetheless, I am happy that it's functioning again! :D

Hmmmm... bleed them before filling them - new one to me (how on earth is someone supposed to know this?) Well, I haven't sent it back yet so what the heck, I'll give it a try. I really like the Colibri (when it worked) so I hope bleeding it will make it work!

Question about refilling them - I'm always confused whether fuel is getting into the torch (sometimes I don't hear anything). The bottle states to press firmly down for 4-5 seconds, release, and do again. Is this really necessary - doing this step over and over versus just holding down until it's full?

I'm not even gunna read every post, but you if you don't bleed it (push down the hole where you put in the gas) AIR is gunna get trapped and NO it will not work.

When I worked in the tinderbox, more people came in bitching about colibri lighters, I'd bleed them, and they'd work great.

What kinda of fuel are you using is a deal to. Only use colibri fuel or better. Don't use wal-mart fuel. I even bought some once just to see if there was a difference and there is.

Colbris work if they bleed and the right fuel is used. I've still got mine!

I have that same lighter in your pic, except it is yellow, and called "Iroda". I paid $8 at the hardware store. My Colibri went back for a full refund. They bled it in the store, added "Colibri" fuel, and it still didnt work  . Glad i got all my money back. Maybe its just hit and miss with Colibri, but i will never buy one.

I use Bic disposables have never been unable to get a smoke lit with them. Maybe you guys aren't doing it right?

I have had two of the Coli's, same style witht the cutter in the bottom. Very convenient for a short time. Then failure. Yes I bleed and adjust the flame. Will never buy another. Got one of those three flame torches, drawback is that I carry a can butane in the car because it sucks fuel, but very reliable for the past two years.

I like the gas station lighters that have colored flame, play music and have blinking lights. Especially the one that looks like a naked girl with lights in strategic places   And those cost only about 4 bucks, but that would be 4 bucks every two weeks. :whistling: Go with a good piece of equiptment.

Since I carry my Colibri Concerga (sp) all day, every day, in my pocket, cleaning and refueling it per the directions that came with it have kept it in great working order. I just hope it keeps on working.

I have had the Blazer/Zippo conversion and it lasted about a month. I had nothing but constant problems with it.

blazer guarantees these unconditionally
at least thats what they told us at the outlaw
take it back, they are supposed to replace it for free

You know, I have a lighter "system" that has worked for me for a while now, and I am wonderfully happy with it. I have a 15 dollar torch that I use when outside, on the golfcourse, or anytime that wind might be an issue. It rides in my poocket when camping, too...great little tool. If I bust it, or burn it out (the intense heat + cheaper torch = shorter lifespan), or even lose it, I won't cry about it. I think I'm on my third one in five or six years. I get them at the local mom and pop hardware store. Then I have the Savinelli (sp?) double corona for indoors. I still prefer to light a cigar with a soft flame if possible. FOr around a hundred bucks....I am thrilled with it. The double nozzle gives a great wide flame.
