Hello all,
Some advice/info on how to maintain a recently empty 100 count humidor, I noticed that since it was down to the last couple of sticks that the humidity on the hygrometer (digital) has maintained only around the 55%-59% mark. Any advice on what I need to keep this humidor properly maintained as I am planning to store some arrivals that I am anticipating in it. I also currently have only one rectangle credo in it. Would it be advisable to pick up another? Or... should I buy some humidity packets or other item like gel jar? I have been following one of my local tobacconists advice to use distilled water every week as needed and cycle every 4 recharge with some glycol solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can post pics if this would help.

Thanks in advance,

Newbie, Ceasar

What was the humidity prior?

I'll assume you know the obvious about keeping away from heat source, calibrated hygrometer, seal integrity, etc.

I have experience with some larger desktops that they hold humidity better when full compared to empty, but that makes sense to me. An empty humidor exchanges more air when opening/closing or if it doesn't seal well. You can check the seal.

I've heard of certain humidification units getting "clogged" over time. Never experienced personally, but something you can possible check/replace.

If you want the humidity to increase until you get more cigars, you can put a shot glass of water or sponge in a dish in there to raise for the short term. Actually I would try that and you should see the humidity rise. If not, than I would question the seal or hygrometer, although a digital can be off it should still increase.

Try to keep some sticks in there at all times to keep the humidity swings stable. I personally would put the new arrivals in some tupperware with a humipack etc and re season the humidor and then transfer the sticks when the humidity in the box is at your desired level. Good luck!

Thank you all for your advice, I know the seal is working or at least was for the past year up until two weeks ago (when I smoked the final stick in the humi). I have a smaller humidor (50 count) that I will probably keep my new arrivals in until I get the humidity elevated again in the larger humi. I really am enjoying being part of CP.

Thanks,

Peace, Ceasar

Fill the humidor with bubble wrap. I used to do this when I ran coolers. It'll take up the excess room, making the job of maintaining the humidity easier. It's inert and won't cause any problems long term.

I had the same problem when my humi was virtually empty. I added some floral foam to go with my beads to help add humidity. I used this to convince the household treasurer to let me but a bunch of cheaper sticks. BY cheaper I mean like Don Tomas and Padron 2000.

Posted a new post for a quick thanks, Thanks for all the advice again. I used the floral foam in a ziplock, and moistened as needed, that worked great.

That's a great idea. I don't need it right now but thanks for the info.
