So I walk into my local shop

This morning I was sitting here enjoying my long weekend and reach for a stick in my desktop humi. I Look and Look and there is nothing in there that interests me at that very moment so I decide to take a look in the coolidor and nothing! Screw it, I take a run down to the local shop. This is a quaint little shop that really doesn't have much of a selection but what they do carry is all premie with very few exceptions(pronounced dog rockets). SO I find a nice Punch Maddie, I was out at home and this is what I really wanted, I grab a few from his open box and first notice the yellow cello, I look and they are all like this so I start looking for an unopened box. No such luck so I clear the last 6 he had in the box! I glance in a corner where he had this big box of empty cigar boxes and figure I could use a few for the new coolidor I was planning on upgrading in the near future and decide to take a look at what he has going on price wise. Pull out a few nice cedar boxes and then it appeared....

Remember that Cuesta-Rey humi, all black with burl inlay. It is a really nice looking desktop humi and I think it came with 4-9 packs of #9s makes the swoosh sound and is very solid. Well, It was in this box so I grab it. I take everything to the counter and his daughter is working the register, I know the family well since they all work there and I stop in just about weekly. I ask her if this was supposed to be in that box becasue it is a humidor and not an empty cedar box? She answers my question with a question, which I hate more than you can imagine, "Did it come with cigars in it originally?" I said yup sure did then she had to nerve to look me dead in the eye and say......

"Look smoking cigars is an expensive habit if it was in that box you pay $5.00 for it just like the rest of the empty wood boxes and the paper ones in the other box are $3.00." :angry2: She was all snappy about it and I was at a loss for words, until she rang up my order and asked if I needed a bag. My ONLY response was

"No that is ok I will just put them in this empty Cuesta-Rey box." :whistling: and opened it up for her to see the Hygrometer and Humi disk. It was at this point she said,

"So do you really think that was supposed to be in that box or did someone make a mistake?" :0

My response was.....

"It was in that box in the corner." :whistling:

I figure I will mention it to the old man next time I see him at the local watering hole just to be fair.

Does it look like this? Man, I though I got a good deal on mine

That is it exactly!! Has three dividers in it that had to be removed as I decided it looked real nice on my black pc stand here in the office

If you don't mind what did these things go for?

EDITED TO ADD: I knew I had not seen too many of these that were all black as you point out on your webpage. Guess it was a better gem than I realized

too awesome! if you ever wanna unload that thing LMK!

The natural colored ones were going for around $300 with cigars, and Atlantic has them for $60 by themselves. I've never seen the black one on any webpage. The place I got it for says he only gets one once or twice a year (dunno how much of a gauge that is, it's not really a good place to begin with, but there you go ;) )

Like I said, I think this guy has maybe 30 or so boxes of cigars on display and that is if you count the normal drugstore cigars. Not a big place at all and not a place I make any major purchases from, I stop in and tell him when i need a specific item and he orders it and lets me know when it get there.

Look at it this way. when I worked at the tinderbox, and we had these humidors, we added up the cigars, INCLUDING the 6 ones that you couldn't get anywhere else, and the cigars themselves were 187 something before taxes. We sold the humis (full of cigars) for 200 and then marked one down 25%. So you paid about right in my book! :p

like that reasoning :p

hahah not sure why, but I almost hate going to the local B&M to get cigars, but boy ohh boy would I be happen to have gotten that deal. I would have probably mentioned that the box is worth about $50 before walking out just to spite that smart ass.

I think that you did the right thing, with that snobby attitude you probably wouldnt have got far. talking to the dad just to do the right thing si a good idea.

I spoke to him last night. He was more upset that he "lost" his well aged sticks that were taken from the box on his desk and put on the shelf for sell and all but three were sold before he got to work. I am under the impression his daughter was not to work yesterday but he and his wife had stayed super late the night before doing an inventory. They told her to open the shop and 'put away everything that was left out'. Well, mistakes as to what was "left out" were made and I ended up with a nice humi, he told me not to worry about because I do more than enough business with him. AND a few well aged sticks that I gifted to him...well, all but 2(1 I smoked and I have one left) There were 8-Punch and a few 858's in the old cigar box on his desk. He found them during the inventory in an old overestock box on the bottom shelf of his humi and decided to keep them for himself. Well, his daughter seen them in the box on him desk and put them away, I bought all the punch and would have bought the 858s had I seen them.

I go to the bar last night and he was there with no sticks. I explained what had happened in the morning at his shop and he giggled saying she was out drinking all night and wasn't happy about working to begin with. He was just happy it was someone like me that know him and not just anyone, but he was going to talk to her. Then he explained he was so let down in the loss of the sticks he didn't even get anything to bring out with him, I had my three finger case with me with two of the punch in it......I had to, couldn't stop myself...Reached into my shirt pocket and took out the label to the smoke I just cut and handed it to him at this point he began mumbling something about me being a no good something or other and was cussing his mother about something....so I handed him my three finger.

About an hour later I guess he decided to see what there was to smoke and was very happy. I stopped by his shop today to get my case and he had a little gift bag for me and I dropped the rest of the sticks off to him that I had picked up(minus the one I saved for myself). He gave me 2 of the 858's that he had found. I dont like the shop becasue there is not much of a selection...BUT he is a friend as well as a business owner and always takes care of his customers beiong me or anyone else. I will still stop in and herf anytime jsut bring my own stick normally.

Well played. I think giving him back the sticks was a most excellent gesture, and the way the shop owner responded would be reason enough for me to do business with him, regardless of the slim selection.

That was a cool story man! That was real cool of you. I have one of the natural colored Cuesta Rey Humidors sitting in my Living room. It is still full though. I think that I only paid like $150 for it. I love the Cuesta Rey #9s but I really only wanted it because of the #9 Stanford's Cameroon Reserves that only come in that Humidor. I just can't bring myself to take any of them out though.
