Rugby was born when William Webb Ellis picked up the Football at Rugby School (England, 1823) and ran with it. Football was played by the boys of Rugby School and everywhere else, and it was generally a very tame game. Rugby turned out, over time, to be a little rougher. Eventually, Football became every man's game while the private school boys, all gentlemen of course, played the rougher sport, Rugby.
