A few cigars that ive smoked lately ive noticed had small(im talking like pinhead sized or a grain of sand) looking round objects in the outer layer of ash....if you inspect the wrappers carefully, youll notice them on it too but they are usually slightly darker. Notice it mostly on darker maduro type wrappers. They do not wipe or rub off the wrappers. My first thought was tobacco beetle eggs, but arent those so small that you cant really see them? Their doesnt seem to be any signs of bettle infestation. Is that just a natural part of the wrapper or am i having a problem??

Those aren't eggs but something I believe is referred to as tooth. I know that sounds funny but I have heard stranger things. The knobs as I call them generally show up on maduro or oscuro wrappers. It won't hurt anything and I actually think it looks pretty cool when you have a 2" ash and it has those goofy looking KNOBS all over it.Smoke on Bro.

Bloom is what it is called and it is a good thing. show the cigar is aged properly. Tooth refers to the amount of veining in it (seniors please correct me here if i am wrong).

I believe it's how rough (as in sandpaper) the wrapper is, and has nothing to do with the veins.

A "toothy" cigar's ash will be toothy as well. If there are white dots on the unsmoked wrapper that is bloom. Right? ???

So I was told that this is plume/bloom by my guy.

this is out of a box of '98 generoso's sitting in a box that I bought 2-3 years ago.

I thought it was mold. It's white w/ long a$$ hairs. It brushes off easily with no discoloration on the wrapper.

Pretty cool huh?

I was actually just asking myself that same question, I am sitting out on my porch smoking a H. Upmann, gifted so graciously by coventrycat, and was like what the crap. And then my roomates 4 year old kid split his toe, and then my cigar went out while he was screaming bloody murder and bleeding all over the place, and now I am going to light this bad boy back up knowing it has aged well :)

Edit: and now he is watching sponge bob, and I can go back to hanging out on the porch

That is indeed mold -- your "guy" is wrong.

yeah...I figured that it was mold. Are they toast? I moved them into a tupperdor w/ a pillow for now. There's 12 of 'em that look this way.

Personally I would toss them as the spores have probably penetrated the wrapper and will cause your cigar to taste like the air in a musty basement.

indyrob I would never listen to "your guy" again.

It's a common mistake, but there's no excuse

yeah...I figured as much. So was the mold present before I store them? I usually add a small drop of bacteriostat to a new dose of water when I recharge my gel, (in my humidor). When I put a box in to store, it's usually in tupperware...1-2 boxes per container(depending on size) w/ 1-2 waterpillows. I bought a bunch of cheap hygro's from target ($2.49) and throw them in w/ the boxes.

The Cuaba's are the only ones that went all "Long Haired Hippy" on me, and right now I have 3 tupper's going w/ a total of 5 boxes in them...none have any problems.

So...is the mold present before I get them and it germinates in my possesion or what?
