Skinny on Consuegras from JR insider

I happened to be on the phone with a JR rep this month, one that I've gotten friendly with. I was curious about the inconsistent feedback on Consuegras in the forums. In summary, many have reported that they used to smoke them but quit because the quality had deteriorated, Others think they're super for the buck.

I mentioned this and the rep said that ordering the Consuegras was quote; "a lottery". She said that while all Consuegras are Premium; handmade long filler brand name cigars, they are indeed seconds and can be rejected for either quality or over-stock reasons. Sometimes the quality problems can affect the smoke; sometimes it is strictly esthetic, sometime perfect cigars that are overstocked.. But you knew this.

What I didn't know was, according to the JR rep, that when you order a bundle of Consuegras one month, you might get one brand of cigar; and then order the same size the next month, and find that the cigars can taste completely different because they are a different brand. The filler or wrapper might be different. She said that the pallets in the warehouse come from the same batch; but the pallet next to it might be a different cigar in the same size. It is possible that you could order two bundles of number 6 the same day and end up getting bundles of different cigars on the order.

If true, that would explain the contradictory reports. In any event, I found the conversation illuminating.

Reminds me of what someone told me about two-buck Chuck. This is a lottery I'm more willing to play.

Thank you for sharing your intel.

I have not tried this brand, but armed with this information, feel I probably will not in the future.

I've been very happy with my Consuegras. Smoking a number 8 Casa Grande right now. I enjoy them as much as some of the more expensive, But maybe not like them so much next time. But I can always use them as give-aways for my friends who only smoke occasionally.

This is true, but I'll add that I've had differant cigars in the same bundle.

The #30 is a great cigar and one of my cheaper smokes that I continually go back to.

If I remember correctly, when you order a certain number Connie (#9s for example), the only thing that is guaranteed is the vitola. Thus, it is possible to get two different brands/blends of the same vitola in that bundle.

If you purchase a bundle of #9s, you may get all Punch Rothchilds, all Hoyo de Monterry Rothchilds, or a mix of both. All cigars should be 4.5"' x 50 though.

There's only one reason to smoke 2nd rate cigars...You're hopelessly addicted to tobacco. Better to smoke one good cigar once a week than to smoke this stuff everyday, in my opinion, of course.

Doc

Dammit, you're not calling my dog rockets second rate, are you?

NOTE: I've seen it here. Smoke what you like; like what you smoke. One mans dog rockets, are another man's are another mans gold locket.

Your view is quite valid and I wouldn't be surprised to find myself adopting it one day. I have the same approach to Scotch. 30 years ago, I drank Chivas and Pinch and enjoyed them immensely, sometimes finishing a bottle on a weekend, with my friends. Today, I tend to buy bottles of good single malts that last a couple of months, even though I share with friends frequently. Still, I try not to be a snob, and find that there is still a time and place for a bottle of Dewars. And, of course, there are blends better than most single malts. If you don't believe it, try a bottle of Buchanan 18 year old Special Reserve.

While acknowledging the validity of your view, there are other ways of looking at it. I look forward, after a long day at work, of going home, opening my humidor, selecting a smoke that I've never tried before, kicking back and watching re-runs of Jericho or Walking Dead. Or sharing a cigar over a manhatten, mint julep, or finger of Macallan, Balvenie or Talisker with my friends.

I especially enjoy finding diamonds in the rough, e.g, relatively unknown, mid-priced cigars that compare favorably to high end smokes. I'm also happy that I can still enjoy smokes in the 4 to 6 dollar range. (And that is what a Connie is except you're paying a couple of buck a stick) I'm sure if I continue here at CP, I will refine my tastes and you guys will bankrupt me.

BTW, what is a second rate cigar? Anything less than upper $$ ISOM? All OpusX all the time? Are Padrons dog rockets too? For the folks that can afford them, more power to them. But even if I were wealthy beyond my wildest dreams, I couldn't see paying $400 to $600 for Cristal when there are perfectly superb champagnes for $40 to 60$. Mother Teresa would haunt me for all eternity.

OK, Ok , Ok, as an ex-cigarette smoker of 40 years, maybe I shouldn't be smoking nicotine daily. Maybe you're making me fell guilty. I hate it when people confront me with Truth. :sign: I give up. Sides, according to the search engine this point has been debated ad nauseum. I'm just trying to talk my way through withdrawal symptoms as I watch the clock, waiting to get home so I can light up a smoke - any smoke. Almost time , almost..

2 bucks is a long way in comparison to even a 6 buck cigar. I'm with Doc. I'd smoke Padron 2000's all day before a 2 dollar cigar..if it answers your "Padron" question.

Am I cigar snob? Yup. Do I really give a shit if you want to smoke crap? Nope, but I did think you came here to learn something. Did I learn ya anything? To answer your question, "What is a second rate cigar?". Anything made by General cigar or Altadis, 1st or seconds is a good place to start, BTW, how many Connies do you have to shitcan because they don't draw or burn right or just plain fall apart?

Doc.

I agree with Doc, too. But us newbies gotta start somewhere. Actually, I don't like smoking any cigar every day. I enjoy the variety and the exploration. I don't even have a favorite smoke anymore. Used to. My regular was Royal Jamaicans until a hurricane wiped out their factory in 88. I have weekday tv smokes, weekend specials, and special events.

And Doc was right - I probably have an incipient nicotine addiction coming on. I start my weekday evening with a decent smoke, like a Padron, Trinitatta, 8-5-8 but frequently have a Connie afterwards, sometimes a third JR EL of some sort.

This is a recent event. My Dad died in February, of emphysema, while I was with him, and since then I've gone from smoking 1 to 4 cigars a month to 1 to 3 an evening. I find some sort of comfort from them and figure my recent and sudden obsession with cigars is somehow a displacement mechanism - whatever the hell that means.

I've always enjoyed them but the these boards and the Internet make it a lot easier to indulge. And I've smoked more good cigars since I've joined CP than I have in the last 20 years put together.

Sky King.

I wouldn't let other's opionions get to you. As has been stated and you quoted 'buy and smoke what you like"(paraphrasing).
I started years ago buying from a much maligned company (Thompson's), paying about a dollar or less for my cigars..
As my tastes changed, and I learn more about cigars(from this site), I have changed my buying and smoking practices.
I will listen to others' descriptions of certain brands but will still buy what I want to try and can afford.
Being retired I can't spend $20 a piece on cigars as I usually smoke one or two a day and I have to justify my purchases with my wife(very understanding lady)
As you well know, what one person describes as the best cigar in the world, is another's dog rockets.
I enjoy reading information on this site and will continue to do so, but ultimately will make my own decisions.
Just my .02 worth
Best Regards
Dave

I'm not retired but I'm in the same boat. I took no offense; from Doc or anyone else, and hope I gave none. Exchanges of this type are ritualistic. When you post a certain opinion, you pretty much know what the responses will be. It's part of the fun. - unless it is deliberate trolling. Kind of like saying "Go Air Force" or "Go Army". You can count on the squids to come back with "Go Navy" :p or more likely, tell you where you can put your dog rockets. :D

I'm a cigar snob. I like expensive cigars, and I have a pile of 'em. I smoke them, almost one a day.

Having said that, I believe there is a time and a place for less expensive cigars. Not crap, but decent, inexpensive cigars. There are several out there that come to mind. Hard to beat the Padron Londres. Really hard; I consider them more or less the "gold standard" of reasonably priced sticks.

IronPeddler recently bought some JR Ultimate bundles which I was interested in trying. Honestly they are are not too shabby for the price. We tried some of the "EL Cohiba Behike Laguito" smokes. Now, make no mistake, they are nothing like a Cohiba reserve...!!! But, for $42.95 / 20 or about $2.15 a stick, you have a very decent if not spectacular Nicaraguan smoke. Biggest downer is that they are a very simple smoke, with pretty much no complexity to the flavor profile. But, for the price, not so bad. Plenty good to share with a buddy that may or may not want to try another, or as a "yard gar" that may hit the can after the 1/2 way point.

One man's opinion....B.B.S.
