Silly Noob Questions

Hey guys....I've actually got two questions.

1) Thanks to the extreme generosity of many members on this forum, I have been bombed with a ton of new cigars! I only have a small 50 count desktop humidor which is pretty maxed out right now. It closes alright, but I probably couldn't fit anything else in there.

That being said, it is normal for your digital hygrometer to seriously drop in Rh when you add a bunch of new cigars? I would imagine so, since the introduction of a bunch of new cigars could suck up the relative humidity that already existed within the humidor. I just wanted a little validation that this is normal.

Before I put in all these new cigars, I had maybe 15 cigars in my 50 count humidor, and the Rh was about 65%. Now the thing is just about full, and the Rh is still around 53%, even though the new sticks have been in there for about 6 hours already. When they arrived on my doorstep, they were really hot from the USPS truck, and it shot my temperature up to the high 80's in there. Now the temperature is slowly dropping (it's at 77 right now) but the Rh is still low.

So what do you think? Do they just need time to acclimate?

2) Sort of piggy backing on the above question, because my desktop humidor is getting pretty full, my little black humidifier is resting on top of the cigars, and almost pressing up against the glass window of the humidor. Would this be affecting the dispersement of humidity throughout the humidor, or does it not matter where the little circular humidifier is placed, just as long as it's in there somewhere?

Thanks in advance!

The answer to the first question is YES. Anytime you add change the # of cigars in your humidor the humdity will change, whether that is going up or down depending on if you are adding or taking away. You will most likely need to add more distilled water to your humidor because of the new cigars.

Answer to the second question: I never hang mine from the top. I always have them set in the corner, I find it is easier to move my cigars around it and I can have more in my humidor that way. Just make sure your humidifier is right side up and you should be okay. I also never cover mine, I make sure the cigars do not rest on top of the humidifier. (not sure if you have to do that or not, but thats just what I do). Hope this helps!

You asked and answered your first question :D

If you are putting in more cigars then you had in the first place, add more distilled water, clearly this is what is needed.

Aaron, I don't get what you are saying ??? :0

LOL Brian! I figured I wasn't making any sense!

How's this: As long as the humidifier is not blocked/or sandwiched betweent he glass and cigars, you should be fine. Make sure the humidifier can breathe. Better? :whistling: ...hope so!

The best way to go bro, is the coolidor. Get a small one if you want, but couple that with the Heartfelt beads, and you're set. Never another issue. I've been through the humidity problems and learned one valuable lesson. Those dramatic humidity changes can really play havoc on your inventory. Now, the only time I go into the coolidor is to pull something out. I haven't added water in over 2 months.

When you mentioned hanging yours from the top I got strange visions

Thanks guys.....you've confirmed what I was already suspecting.

As for the coolidor, that is my next order of business. :)
