Siglo VI, AVO Legacy & Padrón 1926 mini-review

Played a little poker tonight, and had some smokes along the way. I wasn't paying *that* much attention to the cigars, so this will be short and sweet.

Cohiba Siglo VI (9/2003) -- started the night off with this bad boy, it had a nice aroma, and some enjoyable flavors -- with a much sweeter aftertaste and sweetness left on your lips than I expected. Still, I was a little disappointed. It was good, I smoked it down until the end, but there was no trademark Cuban "twang" and overall I found it to be a good, enjoyable stick, but nothing to write home about.

I've heard great things about the Siglo VI's, so I'm hoping with some more age, or a better batch, I'll be more moved.

AVO Legacy (2004) -- A nice cigar, with some interesting tastes to it, but much too young. I'm glad I stashed a box into my humidor, because I think this may end up being a great smoke. As it stood, I smoke it only 3/5ths of the way down before ditching it. Slightly bitter aftertaste, mingled with some indescribable but not particularly pleasant after-notes as well.

I was teased by some interesting flavors, but this cigar just is not ready. I think it has good potential, but if you buy these, do yourself a favor and don't smoke 'em yet, you may be disappointed with your purchase. Stash 'em and age 'em.

Padrón 1926 #9 Maduro (2004, but the tobacco in it is aged 5-6 years already) -- This is my go-to cigar. I absolutely love these things. After the first few puffs, memories of the harsh aftertaste of the AVO disappeared completely. Sweet, rich, nutty, chocolatey tastes... yumm.

The second I lit this cigar up, I received a number of unsolicited comments from the guys at the table. People who had never even heard of Padrón (yes, Virginia, there are some out there :) ) were mentioning on how wonderful the smoke smelled. Well, it tasted even better than it smelled, let me tell you.

......

Overall, the Padrón 1926 was clearly heads and shoulders the most enjoyable smoke. I'm happy, because this is the first I've smoked from the new batch I picked up, and they are wonderful.

The Siglo VI was good, I'd smoke it again, and I did enjoy it... just not exceptional as the price and buzz had me thinking it would be. Perhaps with some age.

AVO Legacy... right now, don't bother. If you like AVOs in general, pick up a box, stuff it in the Humidor, and forget about it.

And by the way, I lost $50. Dammit.

Well, perhaps I misspoke. I didn't mean "go-to" as in I always go and smoke 'em... but rather I'm never disappointed with them. If I ever want a good cigar that I know I'll enjoy, I can go to the 1926s... they've yet to let me down.
