Sick Period

Ive been reading and learning over time about the "sick period" as it applies to ISOMs. I was curious if NCs also go through a sick period? From what I've read it appears as though usually only Cubans are referred to when using such terminology. I know that NC smokes purchased and smoked young are at times less desirable than aged smokes so would this be more or less the same idea as the ISOM sick period? Just curious!

Also...I wasn't sure if this should be posted in the Cuban forum so I apologize if I didn't post in the correct spot.

Thanks!

From my experience, the young NCs taste less mellow than the aged versions. On the other hand, ISOMs in the sick period are unsmokeable. I have some Siglo IVs in that period right now. I'll probably wait another 6 months before I touch them again.

Short answer, NO.

Doc.

I think this was something like what Doc didn't want to get into. Young NCs are young (not sick), although the symptoms can be similar. A Cuban sick period is usually in between two non-sick periods which is different than when they were young. There are always exceptions when taking about nature, though. But they are rare in this case.

I don't know the difference between young and sick, and won't profess to know so. However, just this past week I smoked a La Aroma de Cuba that was quite bitter and very strong tasting of ammonia. I have to be sure it was in that stage (young or sick, or whatever it would be called), and it was not an ISOM. I couldn't make it past the first third of it it was so heavy with that ammonia. If this isn't termed a sick period for a NC, would you guys call that young?

Well,
it was either too young or just a bad stick.

A sick period causes fluctuation. An example: a stick smokes good fresh, sucks between 6 months and 3 years (generally flat, bitter, etc.), and is spot on after that time.

If anyone feels like typing out a long explanation, I'm interested as to why this sick period only occurs in Cubans

I've had some Pepin smokes that I would say were sick, versus just rife with ammonia. I believe it's safe to say that he uses, or at least used, young tobacco.
