Search Function Needs Tweaking

The search feature sucks. I use to have no problem with it's functionality - I prefer the board's search function, preGoogle search bar circa 2007, as I never felt the Google option allowed finer searches. Now that the Google search bar is gone, the basic search function doesn't seem to be the same as it was in 2003-2006.

I can't blame noobs for asking for basic information - I can't find the information either many times, yet I know it exists.

When using the current search option, my best results come from...
Click Search
Clicking "More search Options"
Clicking "More Options"
...and using the most advanced search features with "Results Type > Show Results as Posts"

Any hope of tweaking the search in the forum's software, or making the most advanced search options simply one click away, instead of three?

I have to agree, I use the most advanced search every time and never the others.

Same here. I guess the question is how resource intensive this third tier search is compared to the first two. If net net the load is significantly lighter with this configuration since the change, I guess that'd be the preferred condition for Rod/server.

Me too..............I entertained myself for an hour the other day after searching for a thread which I knew existed but search produced no results. I then started cutting and pasting thread titles into the advanced search feature and on about 20% of them it said there were no results for my search criteria. The other good one is when you search a "topic title only" and it brings back pages and pages of unrelated topics.

This thread is a great relief to me. I was looking last night for what to do with empty cigar boxes. I found absolutely nothing for 45 minutes of effort. But I was only using the basic search.

I will try again with the 3rd tier search and see how that goes.

Thanks for the tip!

Cheers,
Chris

P.S. If anyone has any suggestions for what to do with empty boxes, I'd be interested to know.

I agree on the search. Getting to the advanced easier would be nice. :)

P.S. If anyone has any suggestions for what to do with empty boxes, I'd be interested to know.

Purses, clocks, line ammo cans with them, give them away...

Whew, this is better than group therapy; I, too, find it difficult to find things using the search function and have resorted to using Google's search capability to find things on the site.

My wife likes old cigar boxes, especially the wooden ones. What do you have?

I only have a Davidoff 9 sampler from Japan. It has both English and Japanese text describing the 9 sticks that were in the box. The box consists of a typical box with a "cigar fitted" box for the 9 different cigars in the box.

I might hang on to this for the short term to see if I am going to make a cooler-dor or not. Thanks for the tips though.

I tried a different search using the "suggested method". Still no luck. I was trying to figure out which stick Bill Murray smoked in "Lost in Translation". This is mildly aggravating.

I will continue to use the standard net searches I guess.

Cheers,
Chris

Are you saying that Advanced Search also sucks, or just the basic search?

I just set Advanced Search as the default search mode. However, does Advanced Search work well for you guys? Is it accurate?

Do you want google search back?

IMHO....I'm also a member of a lawn care forum and their search function is the best from a forum I've seen. The bottom of the page says this: Powered by vBulletin® Version 3.6.8

Thanks Rod - that makes it less annoying.

I suspect part of my frustration with even the advanced search, is that there is just so much more information to sift through than there was just a few years back.

I wouldn't want to see the Google search bar back as a replacement for the advanced board search, as I believe happened last time. Does the Google search bar on CP function differently than if you use www.Google.com and type "cigarpass anejo shark" instead of just "anejo shark"?

Yes, the google search bar (if placed on the forum) will search only threads on cigarpass.com, and NOT the rest of the internet. Let me know if you think we should bring it back...

Sure why not - as long as it doesn't replace the existing advanced search, and it's placed somewhere on the board where it is not intrusive. Now the peanut gallery can post pad with "Advanced search is your friend, Newbie." and "Google search is your friend, Newbie".

Ok, let me see what I can do. I'll probably place it at the bottom of the forum this time instead.

Now you know that will have no impact on any newbie that just wants to ask the ubiquitous humidor/cigar/lighter/cutter/ etc question! :whistling:

Top notch service from the man in charge.......now I feel bad for spreading those rumors about your fetish for water fowl. :(

Ok, check the bottom of the forum. Give it a go and let me know what you think.

I experimented by searching for the terms "prestone Lumberg"

The CP Advanced Search pulled up 12 threads when results were viewed as threads. When "Show results as posts" was chosen, I was able to quickly find what I needed.

The Google CP search pulled up 3 threads - while each thread was tediously long to search through, they were pertinent to my search. ( I like the fact that the Google search appears on the bottom of the CP Advanced Search page as well - nice touch.)

I still prefer the user friendliness of the CP advanced search, but I think that they both serve a needed function.

Last request - since I use the simple old style blue Basic Skin, can you incorporate the Google search into that skin as well?
