Picked up a toro at my local shop the other night. I wanted something I hadn't tried
before, and that I could finish on the way home from work. There was one box on the shelf of this brand, so I grabbed one. I'd had Savinelli Seconds, and like them, so I figured this would be an OK smoke.

Short, fat, and very solid describes this stick. Dark maduro wrapper, dry upon inspection, oily after the first few puffs. Terrific burn, complex flavor and aroma.
Clouds of dense, flavorful smoke.

Usually, by the time I get home a cigar of this size leaves only a butt to dump in the outdoor ashtray. I had over half of this smoke left! Brought it in the house and the next morning I plucked it out of the dish I'd put it in, lit it in the driveway, and was still smoking it when I pulled into the parking lot! And there was still enough left to at least think about lighting up that evening when I left! The second burn was just as good as the first, it never got that bitter taste as it burned down.

I would give this smoke a solid 90. There is definitely a box in my future, as I think I may have found my "go to" smoke!

Thanks for the review Bob. I got one in a trade a while back. I think it's a natural though. Was yours a maduro?

Man all these great reviews are making my mouth water!!! Haven't tried one of those, yet.... :sneaky:

That one was a maduro. Jeannie's only had the one box on the shelf, but they had more in the back. Unfortunately, they want $186 for a box, while L'il Brown SS has 'em for $116.

I want to support my local retailer as much as possible, but...... :(

I just smoked one of these. Amazing burn, wonderfully sweet , mild and yet still rather complex. Consistent from beginning to end, and yes I actually smoked it to the end.Tastes to me like it's worthy of the humidor. 3 yers from now I expect great things.

It's pretty new. The Reserves are made by Fuente, the ELS is made by Padron, I believe. (I could be wrong -- only had one)The Fuente Svainellis remind me of a vintage Zino Veritas I recently acquired: smooth, rich, buttery with an easy to medium draw. I think it's one of the best new cigars out there. I plan on buying a box of the Reserves very soon. They strike me as a smoke that will mature very nicely.

Scott1966 pushed me into doing a little more exploration in the box of E.L.S. nats that I received. They are indeed a Fuente product, which goes a long way toward explaining the quality. :D

AND, the nats are every bit the cigar that the maddies are, just different. I really can't say enough good things about this smoke!!

Has Kiki Berger gone to work for Fuente? 'Cause it says, at the bottom of the face label (inside the lid) "Product of A. Fuente & Co."

Or maybe it's a blend that Sr. Berger came up with? Either way, and no matter who makes 'em, it's a great smoke. :D

I thought I'd post a follow-up since I have just recently (an hour ago:)) visited the shop where I bought the Savanelli. The Savanelli I smoked was a Special Limited Reserve. (SLR) This is the cigar that Fuente is making. The other one -- with a darker wrapper -- is 30-40% cheaper and is made by Padron. The Padron version is, not surprisingly, a fuller bodied cigar, while the SLR, a more medium-full-bodied cigar --is a sweeter, melllower smoke, yet it's very VERY flavourful.

The fact that I felt the need to do a follo-up prompts me to bemoan the fact that, when it comes to reviews, it's so hard to tell if the person commenting on a partcular cigar is actually commenting on the same cigar as I have in mind. So many versions, so many sizes...

Where did you here this was a Padron version?

According to everything I've read about Padron, they only make Padron. In the last CA with Jorge Padron he talked about how the only had one brand with three lines: regular, 1964, 1926. They are a small manufacturer. Nowhere near the size of what fuente does.

This is what my dealer told me. I asked him to reitterate this info to me yesterday when I came in raving about the Savidelli , and his story remains the same. Now, he's one hell of an expert on all things cigar -- an encyclopedic knowledge, to tell the truth. (Great personal accounts of the eccentricities of people like Davidoff when he used to deal with him directly in the 70s). He is an eccentric, and could very welll have mixed up his Padrons and his Perdomos, but I tend to doubt it. I also don't think that a Cigar company would necessarily lay claim to a cigar they make for someone else. MAking a cigar for someone and claiming it as one's "brand" seem to me to be two separate things.

Of course they do, look at everything Fuente makes.

However, it may be possible. When Gator and I go to our "office" (the cigar shop) today, I'll ask one of the owners who's friends with the Padrons. I'll keep you posted.

hence the reason for the modifier , "necessarily" before "lay claim" in my first statement:)

I'll be interested to hear what you find out.

Spoke to a couple of guys that know the Padrons personally and they all said they only make Padrons. Could be another Padron not associated with the Padron brand. But as far as those being made by Jose Padrons company, I highly doubt it.
