Normally I smoke robusto-sized cigars and up. However, yesterday I grabbed a couple of really nice "smaller" cigars. Thought I would share my experiences.
H Upmann Coronas Minor (ISOM)
This cigar was given to me by a very good friend of mine. The date code was NOV 00.
The wrapper on this cigar was a little beaten up. The color was light, almost like a nice latte. There were a couple of sun-spots. The cap was triple-flagged. The pre-light nose was mild, but had that wonderful tobacco smell that only cubans seem to possess. The pre-light draw was open and easy, promising a pleasurable smoking experience.
The cigar lit easily and, as predicted, the draw stayed open and easy. Each puff produced mouthfuls of thick, medium-bodied smoke. This cigar produced tons of smoke for its size. The cigar burned nice and even...almost surprising after looking at the wrapper. The ash was nice and white, though a little flakey. The coronas minor stayed cool down to a nub.
The medium-bodied smoke was absolutely creamy on the palate. I used the description of a latte, because that is what the flavors reminded me of. If one could mix a little wood flavoring in with their coffee and milk, I'd have a new drink. The cigar developed a slight nutty/cedar identity as it finished off. A truly delicious smoke.
Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Petite Corona
This little box pressed beauty is one of my "go-to" cigars when I want a quick smoke. The wrapper was dark and oily, absolutely entrancing to behold. The pre-light nose was of coffee and charred wood. The pre-light draw was a little firm, but not too tight.
This little petite corona lit up easily, the draw opening up almost immediately. The smoke was think and plentiful, perfect for blowing smoke rings across my local cigar lounge. The burn was cool and even throughout, never requiring a touch-up and never getting hot. The ash was white and firm...never flaking once. Great construction.
The taste was medium-bodied, and had an overall black-coffee character and texture. There were hints of charred wood and some cedar throughout the smoke as well. Near the mid-way point, there was a glimpse of raw cocoa, but it was gone almost as soon as it appeared. All in all a great smoke. Very different from the morning cigar, but just as enjoyable.
