Specs - 6.5 x 48
Origin - Cuba
Got home yesterday after getting some fresh dolphin (mahi-mahi) and stone crabs. Got the stone crabs going and cooked while the dolphin marinated in some home-made mojo. Opened a bottle of Duckhorn merlot (2001) that I've had resting for a bit. The merlot was simply exquisite. Tastes of berry, some chocolate, earthiness, some leather, that finished tannic, but less so than it did a couple of years ago. Very smooth, not too dry at all. Very, very nice and reminds me why Duckhorn has always been one of my very favorite wineries. The little wife and I enjoyed the stone crabs and merlot, then I headed outside to the grill to throw on the dolphin. The dolphin (along with some saut. red potatoes and steam. broccoli) was delicious, had some more wine, then headed out to the front balcony to overlook the Atlantic and light this baby up.
This stick is about a year or so old. Definitely in its infancy, but it is ready to smoke now. I am looking forward however to what this baby will be like a year from now, then three. It is a deeply cocoa and leather color, beautiful to behold. Very smooth wrapper, with just a hint of a very veins here and there. Punch it, pre-light draw is flawless. Toast, light and it starts to give off bounties of smoke. The initial taste is of a bit of spice and cocoa. That develops into hints of cocoa, leather, earth/forest with some hints of wood as well. The burn was flawless as well, never having to be adjusted in the least, all throughout holding a very nice grey ash. The stick was smooth the whole way through, and while it is a medium to full bodied stick, it never became overpowering or in your face at all (even though I do like those types of sticks). It was just a solidly medium/medium full bodied stick, that was perfectly accompanied by the Duckhorn merlot, though I could see this going well with a nice two-fingers of Green Spot as well.
As evening became night, the beach started to empty and soon the only thing visible on the Atlantic were some departing ships, cruise ships included, that were heading out towards the Carib. This stick started to come to a close, with me nubbing it and finally letting the nub die in an ashtray.
An excellent, excellent cigar, impeccably made. I would strongly recommend these if you like medium to (lightly) full bodied sticks. It will be a pleasure to see how these sticks measure up in a few years, and I can't wait. Right now though, they are definitely ready to be smoked.
