Salty Wrapper

I tried a Cubao recently and found that I did not care for the taste of the wrapper (salty.) This cigar was made with an Ecuadorian Sumatra Oscuro wrapper, so i know to stay away from that in the future. (although I'm not sure what part of that descriptor is cause for my distaste.) Any other wrappers/cigars that I should avoid knowing that I do not prefer that salty/spicy taste?

I love a good Sumatra wrapper, when done correctly they are hard to beat for my tastes. You may look up a different blend using a Sumatra wrapper and see if your diagnosis still holds true. I think the Ashton VSG uses that wrapper and are some of the tastiest cigars I've found. If you don't like spice though, you might want to give these a miss. Also stay away from Dominican and Nicaraguan cigars as they tend to have some spice to them as well. You may well develop a fondness for the spicy cigars, but right now it sounds like you tend to like a milder cigar.

Cuban Sancho Panza's are notoriously salty.

Spice is another matter. It can describe any number of flavors, both pleasant and unpleasant. My experience is that most people often say "spice" when they really mean black pepper. Oscuro cigars are often known for their intense peppery kick. However, you can also find other spice flavors in cigars like cumin, nutmeg, clove, and ginger. You may find you enjoy certain kinds of spice flavors in your cigars, but not others (like pepper). If you truly don't find a pepper twang appealing, stay away from most Pepin blends including off-shoots like the Tatuaje and San Cristobal lines.

Thank you, that is a good guide to get me started in the right direction. Yes, pepper could easily be used to describe what I tasted...I don't have a terribly sensitive pallette, but it was definitely a earthly bitter spice.

I suppose I will learn these things as I go. :)

Funny how spice means different things to different people. I really like the spice/pepper of Padrons but I had an Epernay L'Elegance and I felt like I was sucking on a pepper mill. Yikes!
