Was gifted a couple of these sticks a while back and finally got around to trying one out.
The model in question: Saint Luis Rey Serie G - No. 6.
Specs -
Measures 6 x 60
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro
Binder: Connecticut Broadleaf
Filler: Nicaraguan
Origin: Dominican Republic
By appearance, a beautiful looking stick. Touted as a "Double Maduro." Reminiscent of the La Gloria Cubana Serie R and Rocky Patel's Edge. Very nice, very solid construction. Cut the cap, very smooth and easy draw, which might be expected with this particular size/gauge. Toast the foot, get this baby going...
PLUMES of smoke. I mean PLUMES. This baby is an absolute bounty of smoke. I like that. A bit of spice on the first taste, but then that smoothes out to just a medium to full bodied tobacco flavor. No real hints of leather, wood, cocoa, coffee, lima beans or whatever the hell else can be thrown in there type of comparisons that you usually read about. Just a good "strong" tobacco flavor. That's it. No other nuances or flavors coming through. Not really complex at all.
However, towards the end of the stick, it starts to get a little flat...kind of similar to a stale stick....something like coming back to a stick a few hours later that you had been smoking previously (if you even do such things). In other words, not entirely appealing.
I worked through the last 1/3 of the stick that way and then let it die. Wasn't as strong of a stick as I had expected or been told about, but wasn't mellow either. Just a medium to light-full style smoke. In my estimation anyway.
All in all....not a completely bad smoke. I will give the other stick some downtime in the humi and then go back to it and see how it compares. If there is any substantive change, I'll post it. I don't expect there will be however.
Generally speaking, Saint Luis Rey make some outstanding smokes at an unbelievable price. Their Reserva Especial are absolutely great smokes. These Serie G are definitely an attempt to go after the Serie R, Edge and, perhaps even Alec Bradley Maxx type crowd. A good attempt, but not something I'd necessarily want to get a full box of.
Edited for typo and to add in the fact that this is a "double maduro."
