I smoked a Roxor Deluxe Non Plus Ultra today. This was my first opportunity to smoke a cigar that, I believe, was part of the goody bag from the Quad-State Herf.
This cigar was 5 inches long, and FAT--at least a 52 ring, maybe bigger. The overall construction looked good, as did the bunching. The wrapper wasn't very pretty. It was a light colorado color and had a somewhat sickly greenish hue to it. I thought my eyes were being influenced by the eye-catching metallic green band; but even after removing the band, the wrapper clearly had some green to it.
Pre-light draw seemed ok. Once I lit it up, the draw felt loose. I attributed this partly to the very large ring, which prevented me from taking satisfactory draws (imagine trying to smoke a toilet paper tube). The initial flavor was herbaceous and on the mild side. It tasted like Nicaraguan tobacco to me. The ash was a light gray, and the burn remained very even. About 1/3rd of the way in, I picked up on some sweetness, and the body firmed up a bit. By the halfway mark, the flavor had picked up some, but didn't deliver the punch I was hoping for. I also noted that the draw seemed better, but maybe I was just more used to the fat gauge and had made adjustments. There were some hints of coffee, but this cigar quickly turned bitter, and I had had enough with about 2" remaining.
Overall, I would say that this cigar was medium-bodied and was of fair quality. This cigar didn't particularly appeal to my tastes, but it wasn't a bad smoke. I have never heard of this brand, and have no idea what sort of price point they sell at, so I can't give a recommendation on whether I feel they offer any value.
I do, however, appreciate the sponsor who supplied us with these cigars. It gave me the opportunity to smoke a cigar I was completely unfamiliar with, and would likely have never tried.
