I have been a good boy and stayed away from the devil site for quite some time. Temptation got the better of me a couple weeks ago and I placed some bids on a few sticks I had never heard of. Worst case I could use them at work. I have found that some of the other parts clerks at neighboring airlines also smoke cigars. When I go over to borrow a part, things go much better if I place a cigar on the counter with my requisition form. These guys are swisher and backwoods guys, so even a cheap hand roll is high quality to them.
I got a bundle of these R.B. Fundadores Longfellow Maduro. It is a 6.8 x 48 stick made in the Villazon factory.
When the cigars arrived, I was suprised to see that the cellos were very yellow with age. Apparently these have been sitting in the dark corners of a warehouse for some time. Rather than write them off as a trade stick, I figured that I should try one before I cast them off as a complete dog rocket.
Construction is not the greatest. The wrapper has some thicker veins that gives it a bit of a rough appearance. I would say this is due to the use to lower quality wrapper or that they are seconds from another maker that are being passed off under this brand. I tried Ginseng's score and life method of cutting (worked really well, think I will use this method from now on) and gave a pre-light draw. The pre-light taste was nearly identical to the Connies I have come to enjoy. Seeing how these came from the same factory is no suprise.
Toasted the stick and lit up. I was met with the same chocolate, coffee flavors I have experienced with a well aged Connie. Lots of smoke and an overall nice flavor. Hmm, maybe I will keep these for myself.
The burn was very even all the way down. Ash held on well and was a grey/white color. The flavor profile for this stick from start to finish was nearly identical to the Connies I have smoked. Had the band been removed, I would have guessed that I was smoking a Connie that had been in the humidor for 6 months to a year.
Overall, I think I scored a nice find. I got a bundle of 20 for 13 bucks off of Cbid. They came already aged and smoke just like the well loved Connie. Not sure what these were like when they were new, but the time spent in the dark confines of a cigar warehouse has done them well. Think I will grab another bundle while they are available.
Guess the guys at the other airlines will have to live with their backwoods for awhile longer.
