I stopped by the local tobacconist after work yesterday, with the intention of sitting in their lounge and smoking a RyJ Churchill A/T. This is the second one I’ve smoked from a box of ’04 revisado originally from ’00. Unfortunately, I hadn’t considered how popular a destination this might be on a late Friday afternoon… As I should have known, the lounge was packed! Fortunately, the unseasonably mild weather gave me the option to smoke outdoors. While not the best candidate for an outdoor smoke, considering its somewhat mild profile, I decided to go ahead and light it anyway.

Construction looked good as usual with these cigars. It had a beautiful evenly colored wrapper, with no blemishes. Pre-light draw was a tad looser than I would have liked, but nothing to be concerned about. I lit her up and headed for Battery Park.

The initial draws produced copious amounts of creamy smoke. The flavor had hints of vanilla and was particularly nutty. The nuttiness reminded me of the distinctive taste of the NC Partagas #10’s I used to smoke years ago. The burn was nice and even with a black ash. The park was undergoing some construction, and was not quite the relaxing environment I was hoping for, so I decided to walk around.

The subtle flavor changes were hard to pick up as they occurred, but midway through, the nuttiness gave way to an earthy, mushroomy flavor. The final third was characterized primarily by notes of espresso.

I smoked this cigar to the nub and was pleased with how well it had performed on my stroll around lower Manhattan in a breeze that seemed to switch directions with every block. I disposed of the butt and hopped on the train at Brooklyn Bridge. I wouldn’t recommend smoking this cigar walking around outdoors as I did. An indoor setting would best highlight the subtleties of this smoke, but sitting outdoors on a calm day would probably be adequate.

Overall, the cigar and the rare weather made for a wonderful experience.

Sounds good; really enjoy the maduro reserve line that they have put out. Good stick to try out if you enjoyed that churchill.

Thanks for the review. I haven't been smoking long, but have enjoyed the Bully and Veronas Court from RyJ. I will have to check out the Churchill A/T next!!

Very nice review. Some folks consider the RyJ churchills the Macanudos of the Habanos world, but I would disagree. It's far more flavorful than a Macanudo.

I see that you're in NYC. If you are free, perhaps you'd like to join us this Wednesday at Churchill's on Long Island this Wednesday afternoon for a mini herf.

LOL! They do tend to be fairly mild, but they are quite complex if smoked in an appropriate environment. I've only smoked one Macanudo in my life, and I thought it tasted like I was smoking lawnmower clippings...

PM'd regarding mini-herf.

ironmike5 and JHawk,
The cigars recommended and that you've tried only have the brand name in common with the cigar reviewed. Sorry for any confusion.
