This is the cigar being sold at CI, with the claim that they are the original 140,000 produced but never sold before Rocky changed factories. They are supposed to have been resting for the last four years.

The construction and appearance of the cigar was great. The draw was smooth and ample. The cigar I smoked however looked as if it was mishandled during packaging or shipping, and had some foot damage and a small hole in the wrapper.

The burn was at times erratic, but corrected itself and never required touch-up. The draw was easy, and produced copious amounts of fairly creamy smoke through the first two thirds.

The cigar flavor profile was dominated by earth and leather tones, which is nothing like the regular RP Sungrowns, which I find to be dominated by pepper. There was a shift towards pepper in the second third, but it was subtle and not overpowering. Basically, the first two thirds were smooth, mellow and what I would consider mild.

The final third was a different story all together. Somebody turned up the power at this point. While the flavor profile stayed with the earth tones, the strength took off on a logarithmic scale. The creaminess disappeared, and the cigar took on a full bodied feel. There was still plenty of smoke, but I had to slow down. The smoke produced a tingling and almost a burn on my tongue, as if it was burning too hot, but it wasn't, it was cool. I nubbed it and caught a bit of a buzz off the sucker.

All in all, a good smoke. It showed the mellowing and blending of it's age. I'm just off the end of a head cold, and may not have experienced everything I should have, but I can tell I will enjoy the rest of my stash.

I look forward to hearing if anyone else has tried on of these, and what they think.

I see creamy, mild, and smooth. My three favorite words. And the fact that you could taste these flavors during a head hold, I wonder how the cigar will be after everything clears up. Good review.

I just got a fiver in. After reading your review I think I'll have to try one this weekend.

All I can say about these OSG from Rocky Patell is I'm glad he tried again later. This first try at a sun grown wrappered smoke leaves much to be desired. The flavor is flat, the burn required touch-ups all along the way, little or no flavor development until the very end, and even then it's not necessarily good development. To me it's obvious why only 140,000 were made and why they were never brought to market. If you're looking for something like the current RPSG, this is not it.

:D Nice review.
I have some toro's sleeping for about 4 months now so your review makes me want them more. I can;t wait to try them.

Thanks for the great review! I am an RP SG fan so I am curious about these. Hoping to get another "non-head-cold" review.

I'm a big of of RP and was getting ready to order them and then saw CI's age restriction. You have to be 21+ to order from them and I'm only 19. That pissed me off, they have some pretty good prices.

Edit to add: Does anybody know how/if CI does age verification? :whistling:

Thanks for the review. The same has been reported several times now.

Having aged a number of RP SGs, it doesn't surprise me. When they are fresh they are sweet with a bite. At six months to a year, they are where I like them - still sweet but with depth and body as well as many more subtle flavors like leather and cocoa. As they age beyond this, they start to lose the sweet quality that is a significant part of the original profile. Still a good cigar, IMO. But not the cigar I wanted.

So I try to smoke them between six and nine months.

I finally got around to smoking one of these, and sorry to say, I wasn't impressed. I had to work to get enough smoke out of it, and the flavor wasn't to my liking. It had a bitter almost grassy taste that didn't develop into anything else.

Maybe your RP was a little young? I have only had one of the seconds and found it a nice creamy, consistent medium body smoke. Give it another go with some more rest?

I've got three more hibernating. They'll see light of day next spring.

I just tried to smoke one of my 5ers and was going to do a review, but after a quick search these are my exact sentiments, with one addition, pre light draw was of manure as well as the first 3rd, not earth, manure. RP OSG = RP POS

anyone want a trade, 4 osg's, for anything.

I love these OSG's, real tasty.
If yall don't want yers, I'll smoke em! ;)

Cheers,
Rob

Not sure if there was sarcasm in that Rob but I'll have to agree. The few pc's I've smoked were pretty good. Not as good as the regular sun growns but decent enough to smoke the 5 pack I had.

no sarcasm at all Mike, I like these smokes alot.
They've got a real satisfying woody flavor (IMHO)

up for a trade? I've got 4 left. I'll even throw in a pepin or two to sweeten a deal if you've got something better.
