This is the cigar being sold at CI, with the claim that they are the original 140,000 produced but never sold before Rocky changed factories. They are supposed to have been resting for the last four years.
The construction and appearance of the cigar was great. The draw was smooth and ample. The cigar I smoked however looked as if it was mishandled during packaging or shipping, and had some foot damage and a small hole in the wrapper.
The burn was at times erratic, but corrected itself and never required touch-up. The draw was easy, and produced copious amounts of fairly creamy smoke through the first two thirds.
The cigar flavor profile was dominated by earth and leather tones, which is nothing like the regular RP Sungrowns, which I find to be dominated by pepper. There was a shift towards pepper in the second third, but it was subtle and not overpowering. Basically, the first two thirds were smooth, mellow and what I would consider mild.
The final third was a different story all together. Somebody turned up the power at this point. While the flavor profile stayed with the earth tones, the strength took off on a logarithmic scale. The creaminess disappeared, and the cigar took on a full bodied feel. There was still plenty of smoke, but I had to slow down. The smoke produced a tingling and almost a burn on my tongue, as if it was burning too hot, but it wasn't, it was cool. I nubbed it and caught a bit of a buzz off the sucker.
All in all, a good smoke. It showed the mellowing and blending of it's age. I'm just off the end of a head cold, and may not have experienced everything I should have, but I can tell I will enjoy the rest of my stash.
I look forward to hearing if anyone else has tried on of these, and what they think.
