Rocky Patel Autumm Collection 2008
Size: 5 x 52 rg Robusto
Wrapper: Sumatra
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Honduran
Strength: Medium (was mild to me)

My expectation of this cigar were fairly low, as the few reviews I have read on it were less than spectacular. Initial inspection of it did, however, show that the cigar was well constructed, as it sported a very smooth wrapper devoid of any tooth, though it did have a patchwork of veins throughout. It had a good heavy feel to it, and a nice firm feel when squeezed but not hard, which would indicated a possibility of a plugged stick. The bunching in the foot was nicely done, but the cap was poorly done and very rough looking.

On smelling the foot, I could faintly detect a sweet, cinnamon like scent, and after clipping the end to take the customary prelight draw I caught a faint, muted sweet taste. I toasted the foot, took a couple deep pulls, and was greeted by a surprisingly pleasant pepper spice on the back of the tounge, as well as flavors of toasted bread and a creaminess. Perhaps this cigar is going to surprise me! The draw was spot on, and the burn was razor sharp, revealing a dark gray and black ash that fell after the first inch and a half. About a third of the way in, the flavors were very consistent, save for a hint of toasted nuts that had crept in. The draw grew a little tighter, but not enough to be a negative. Tons of billowing, pleasantly sweet smoke was being produced at this point. A woodiness then showed up, which was complimenting the other flavors very well. I was actually enjoying this cigar, though it isn't the most complex one I have had, and the flavors were there but a little muted. This cigar was said to be of a medium-full strength, but I found it quite mild.

Halfway in the cigar took a turn for the worst, with a glue like flavor coming out that drowned out all the other flavors. I purged, and smoked it for another inch hoping that it would change, but alas it did not. I chucked it, took a swig of coke, and headed back inside.

This cigar started off nicely, despite the mildness of it, and perhaps with some time it would have evolved into something rather nice. For the price, I doubt I will pick up another one, though if I was given another I would still smoke it. I'm glad my expectations were not high for this cigar, as I would have been dissapointed.

I was going to buy a box of these since my first son was born in October 2008. I thought it would be cool for him when he got older to have a box of cigars that were released the same time he was born. I decided I better try one out first before I bought a whole box of them. Your experience mirrored mine exactly. I found it to be very mild but a decent smoke. For the most part I would say that it is enjoyable, but I decided not to buy any because they just weren't that great.

I actually talked to the Tobacconist in my local shop today and he referred to the Summer and Autumn sticks tasting like "clothes lines". Rocky has flooded the market with so many cigars making it hard to keep track of the ones that are worth wasting butane on.

I agree with you about Rocky putting way too many cigars out. I can't imagine his quality control being very good with that many sticks in his line-up. I wouldn't call the Autumn Collection terrible. It's just that there are way better cigars out there for a lot less money.

His summer blend is way better than the spring blend. As for quality control, it's always spot on. Whether you like the blend or not, quality control is very good at Rocky's. Have you ever had a plugged Rocky?

I'll agree that the summer blend is better than the autumn. I haven't tried the spring, so I can't comment on it. My apologies to the folks at Rocky Patel. I didn't mean quality control as far as construction, but more in flavor. It seems that the first couple batches of any particular line are great and then they slowly taper off with each new batch. I've noticed it with the RP Fusion and I've seen similar posts about the Edge and some of his other lines. As far as construction, you are 100% correct. They are without a doubt well constructed. They usually have a great draw and burn razor sharp. I've only had 1 plugged RP and that was a Fusion. That is one out of countless RPs I've had. I certainly don't hold that against them. It happens.

I agree 100% I had some of the first batch of the old worlds and they rank up there with the best cigars I've ever smoked. I had one recently and wasn't nearly as good. I think Rocky uses the best tobaccos he has to release a new line and when they run out its replaced with not so good or maybe not so well aged tobacco.
