I love Rocky Patel cigars. His flavor profiles are usually a bit on the unique side and I think that is what draws me to them. The 1961 is no different. Made with an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, a Honduran binder, and a Nicaraguan filler, this cigar has a strange, but good flavor combination. But I’m jumping ahead at this point. The cigar itself is a beautiful brown chocolate color with an intricate 2 part band. The first half of the band is black with a white tobacco plant, complete with a large root system and the numbers 1961 (Rocky’s birth year) on it. The second band is a solid cherry red with the RP logo on it. The band, in combination with the slightly veiny chocolate colored cigar, makes for a striking visual addition to your humidor. Visuals aside, the cigar has a nice musty floral smell to it. Something I’d imagine an old jungle would smell like. The cigar lit without issues and burned evenly throughout the burn. The initial puffs are a bit of a distraction with a bold spicy pepper flavor that just about drowns out the wood, nuts, and cocoa flavors. Thankfully the pepper calms down after a handful of puffs and the wood and cocoa becomes the big flavors, while the almonds and pepper tease the back of your pallet. So far everything about this cigar was great, but then the ash broke off onto my lap – not a lot of fun and it was only about a 1/3” long! Slightly warm lap aside, I continued smoking. The second half of the cigar was a nice surprisingly complex flavor combination. It began to develop an overall pleasant sweetness. There were nice earthly flavors and the pepper gave way to a creamy fruit flavor. The main tastes were an earthy cocoa with a bit of a creamy finish. However, the every once in a while a slightly sweet floral and cherry flavor would pop in. This bad boy was tasty…and then the ash fell off in my lap again. That’s twice bitten by the 1961, but I soldiered on. The last third of the cigar tasted pretty much like a combination of the first two thirds. There were occasional hints of a sweet creaminess but overall it had a slightly peppery leather taste to it (and the ashes fell into my lap for a third time). This cigar pretty much sums RP up. It’s got a good flavor combination combined with a pretty cigar that’s slightly hampered by a bit of a shortcoming (in this case an ash head that refuses to stay on the cigar). Second degree burns on my crotch aside; this was a great cigar and one that I recommend for anyone who’s been curious about the Rocky Patel hype.
