So Temps in my cooler have been climbing, I have been using frozen water bottles wrapped in a towel on the outside top and bottom, but it has only dropped the temp down to about 77/78. This is not good. The RH has been holding a steady 64-66% for the last 2 weeks or so. I have about a pound and a half of 65% beads in there. I know its a lot, but with a RH of about 20% in my building it helps keep the swings down.

So, back to the temp...I placed a smaller metal ammo can in the cooler with 3 20oz frozen water bottles, and the RH just fell off, it is down to about 56 or so. WHY?

I checked my hydrometer with the calibration pack, 75% spot on......

Any ideas?

Tim

*edit- I checked the beads and they may have been a little dry, added water, and now waiting...also edit for spelling

I'm wondering if it wasn't just a combination of the beads needing water and the escaping humidity when you were opening the cooler to adjust the temperature.

condensation onthe cold metal ammo can. Wrap it in a towel and see what happens

Since your set up is somewhat a temporary one, and considering the conditions and situation, I wouldn't be so concerned about the heat. (did I just say that? ;) ) Keeping the humidity is whats most important. Unless you're trying to accomplish long term storage forget about the temp. (within reason) You're prob into your cooler daily and easy enough to give them a once over for beetles. If you should happen to see any just remove that cigar and smoke it. Beetles don't overnight do the kind of damage you've seen in some of the pictures here. That kind of damage is weeks and weeks of bug infestation. If you see one you have plenty of time to isolate and smoke it.

Don't know how many cigars you're storing so its all kinda relative.

This is my feeling as well. Re-calibrateed the hydro, and will check the stats in later this afternoon
