Recommend Some Fancy "Vacation" Cigars

Hi All,

I work kind of a weird job -- 10 months of mayhem and crazy hours in the office, and then two months of minimal work that can all be completed from home in the evenings. Unsurprisingly, I very much look forward to this two month hiatus and it keeps me going for the 10 month marathon. This year, in addition to playing as much golf as I can, I'd really like to light up some special cigars. I've come far enough in the hobby at this point that I think I'm ready to appreciate some of the bucket list cigars and begin getting a taste of what all the hype is about. I've been lucky enough to smoke a pretty wide variety of Opus X blends and gone through most of the Padron portfolio, including the anniversary series, black series, and family reserve lines. I've also smoked a good bit of the Davidoff lineup and ran through Liga Privada like it was out of style. But, I want to venture further -- perhaps into Habanos (though procuring these is a headache) or into some lesser known new world blends. This is where I hope that you can help. I'm looking for your ideal vacation splurge cigar -- something that will be memorable and a nice benchmark of a brand. All recommendations are much appreciated!

Thank you. This is exactly the kind of recommendations I was keeping my fingers crossed for. I love the sound of the blend on the El Titan de Bronze -- right up my alley and added to cart. I've heard only wonderful things about the Viaje as well and will sleuth around for a single. The Andalusian Bull is definitely on my list but I haven't had much luck finding one.

Good call. I need to do some more research on these and try to get a sense of the blends. From what I've seen, almost every leaf of the cigar is "undisclosed" which makes it a bit tricky to order blind. Maybe the Byron 1850 No 1 (8 x 54) would make a good July 4th stick! 😅

Hmmm. I hesitated to even suggest this for two reasons. First, it does not fit your definition of "Fancy". It's not an Opus X or Liga Privada class cigar. Second, it's pretty polarizing. One guy on Cigarpass thinks it's OK, another reviewer thinks it's a dog rocket. But when I think "Vacation" I think about what I like and that's a big ring, quality build, slow-smoking cigar I can enjoy with a scotch or bourbon in total relaxation. Vacation can be on a Dominican beach or sitting in my gazebo with some ribs on the smoker. Being rare and/or expensive is not a criteria for me.

Now this cigar is definitely polarizing, but at a large cigar retailer with 747 reviews it garners 75% 5-star and 18% 4-star reviews, so it doesn't suck. That's a sizeable enough sample to be statistically significant. But did I say it's polarizing? If you have not guessed, it is the Drew Estate MUWAT Kentucky Fire Cured. My suggestion is if you are adventurous, only buy a 5-pack, just in case it's not for you.. If you smoke a pipe, and you enjoy traditional English blends chances are this will be in your wheelhouse. I love them, but another member tossed his in the trash after a few puffs. I've read on another forum, someone smoked one, then used the others to toss on charcoal briquettes while grilling his steaks for a bit of smoky flavor. I did mention this is polarizing, didn't I? 😅

I like the Fat Molly version, a 5 X 56 robusto size in my gazebo with a glass of Johnny Walker Double Black on one small ice cube while listening to the Allman Brothers. That's a vacation at home for me. Maybe toss this in with some real "fancy" cigars, just to change things up. By the way, this is not infused like some of the other abominations Drew Estate puts out. The tobacco is cured in a barn over a smoky oak, maple, and hickory fire for two weeks in a well-known tobacco process. Like I said, if you like English pipe blends, chances are you'll love this.

The MUWAT is a very decent cigar, like anything, taste and opinions are subjective.
Never shy away from making a recommendation, after that, it smoker will make up their own mind
 
Good point, @MX ! I'm new here, though, and was a bit hesitant to suggest this until I get a better feel for the place. Was reading another thread here on the KFC and @LarryH wondered how it would play with an Islay malt or a smoked beer like Schlenkerla. I think that would be fantastic! Gonna try that. This thread just made me order a 20-stick bundle of the Fat Mollys. I've been out for a while.

Don’t hesitate at all! It’s a great way to get to know people, and for people to get to know you!

As you have started to see already, the guys here have decades of combined knowledge and are always quick to help out or answer questions. (Well, except for @CBoukal . He will belittle, berate, and argue with you until you finally say you agree with him just to shut him up!😉)

This is a fantastic suggestion -- thanks! I was being somewhat facetious with the word "fancy". I'm really just interested in learning what smokes folks enjoy on their vacations. My local b&m had some flying pig versions of the MUWATs last time that I was in. I will definitely stop by and pick one up -- sounds like I can always throw it on the bbq if I don't like it. 😅
 
Yes, you can! 😅 Some steak chefs swear by them!

The Flying Pig is a 60 ring. I've had a couple, but I settled on the Fat Molly for me, a 56 ring is plenty for a leisurely and cool smoke. And the Islay malt or Schlenkerla was a genius pairing suggestion by @LarryH ! If you've never tried Schlenkerla, that's probably also polarizing! 😅 Think of a heavy beer, somewhere between a Porter and a Stout, that tastes like smoked bacon.

In fact, with my Fat Molly's inbound, I'm going to hunt me up some Schlenkerla. Next weekend's 'home vacation' smoke is all set up for me. :cool:
 
Yep. It’s polarizing! 😂 I’ll post some more mainstream suggestions I’m sure. His question just brought this to mind.

This! Along with making sure you have the proper humidification in your travel case. Bovida packs work great for me. Most cigars smoke like shit if they’re not properly humidified and what you paid for them no longer makes a difference.
 
Might give the Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Mi Querida Black "SakaKahn" a look. I really like them; they're very 'big' flavored NC smokes. IMHO DT&T is making some of the better sticks on the market these days. Really enjoy them. Pretty widely available from the known suspects:

I'd give my money to Nelson a 1000 times before I'd buy Davidoffs anymore. In my opinion, both Nelson's Cigars and business, are several leagues above Davidoff now a days. Davidoff today, is not the same as it was 8 to 10 years ago; and I don't mean it's for the better it!
 
Man, I don't know. Fancy vacation cigars..............are honestly over rated. You'll worry too much about selecting the "perfect" ones, then when on vacation, they'll either let you down or you won't have enough time to truly enjoy them. Pick things you know work and that you enjoy. If I were you, I'd grab some Anniversary Padrons, whether 1964/1926 or the 40th/45th/etc. If you can find Opus/Anejos, grab those. Hell, even the Chateau Fuente SGs are great, so are their sungrown 858's.

It really comes down to what Tim stated. I tend to gravitate towards something I know works and that I enjoy, when I really want to wind down/slow down and enjoy things.
