OK I'm a real cigar newbie. So my question is this, how do humidors actually work? I mean I know they regulate humidity and temp, but is there a mechanism built in them that does this? Do they need to be plugged in? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Humidity is controlled by a cple different things.

1.credos -round circular disks that you add water and ppg to to regulate a constand RH
2.beads -these will absorb moisture and relase moisture as needed, beads can be found at 65% and 70% RH
3.cigar oasis - these are the machines that are plugged in .these will release bursts of h2o in order to maintain an constant RH in a humidor.

All humidors to is maintain an airtight seal so that the humidification devices can do their jobs.

Yeah basically the humidor is only the box made with spanish cedar so that your cigars won't get ruined. The other devices maintain the humidity not the box itself. The easiest way to do it is to get a digital hyrdrometer and some humidification beads from David at CLICK HERE He has all the info on the beads on his site and you can find digital hydrometers almost anywhere online.

Not always....... mines made from Honduran mahogany. There's other woods that are capable also.... just not all woods.

This thread could go on for a while but the basics were covered.

More expensive humidors will control RH as well as temp.

Average one just control the RH while the temp is controlled by the enviorment around it.

Overall, the humidor is meant to keep the cigars at the correct RH so that they are primed for smoking and aging.
