So fella's... I would like to know what is the proper way to put down a cigar for a while? I don't want my wonderful cigar to go to waste. Just let it go out on its own and then what?

Ree

If it goes out then it's done!!!! well unless you light it up right away. They taste nasty as hell if you relight after a few mins or so.

It'll never be as good as the first lighting. But if you are going to relight, before you let it go out, pruge the cigar by blowing out throught it several times. This will at least reduce the amout of cold ash that you smoke when you relight it.

Great topic. My doofus brother-in-law never smokes a full cigar in one sitting. He always smokes half and "saves" the other half. It drives me crazy. In my opinion, when a cigar goes out (and sits for a few minutes, as Backslide said) the cigar is done. If you don't have the time to smoke the cigar, choose a shorter cigar.

Wimps! The Governator and I are perfectly happy to leave a cigar and come back and finish it the next day, if need be. Once you burn 1/2 inch to 1 inch past the ash line, it pretty much tastes like it did the night before. Yep, pretty much. :)

Face it, you're just a cheap bastid Will! ;)

I have used the "Cigar Savor" tube that puts the cigar out and then seals it in the tube. About 80% or so of original taste is saved but the time limit is still very short and putting a cold siliva soaked roll of leaves in your mouth is not a particularly attractive thought.

I've been caught re-lighting on occasion as well. Personally, I cut off the burned end a good 1/2" behind the burn line, re-cut the cap end (just to delete built-up tar) purge and go for it.

On many a cigar that doesn't go out, I recut the cap end about 1/2 way thru it if its building tar... instant profile change. :) and completely re-enjoyable. JMHO.

Second this - when I'm interrupted and have to leave a 'gar unfinished, but want to keep it I:

Purge
Snip the lit end
Purge again

When I return I snip the unlit end, as req'd
Light
Purge

It will never be "as good" as a single light, but any good cigar will still be better on a re-light than a dog rocket in it's first light. Besides - I can't afford to waste a $5+ stick just because I got interupted 5 minutes into it. If I was more than half through - I may consider the cost/benifit ratio of re-lighting vs starting a new stick or calling it quits for the night.

-K-

I didn't have a chance to go back to my smoke last night and left it on the porch all night ??? I'm going to toss it. Thanks for the info, though, fellas. I'll just make time to finish next time.

And loving it, Chief! :p

Once you put it out, or it goes out. It's out. Re-Lighting, i think, kills the cigar from ever having what it did when you first started. If you can't finish that Diamond Crown Maximus Double Corona No. 1, then don't start it. It's like sex with a woman. If I get want I want (Most part time smokers want a nice buzz and stop) then what justice are you giving this nice, handmade, sweet smelling piece of art. Now if you excuse my boys, I think I've got a Diamond Crown with my name on it!

To each his own, but the Governator and I ain't no girlie-men! :p

Usually I have had the skunk effect upon re-light. But last summer the oddest thing... I started a cigar, forgot about it, and laid it down before a three day fishing trip to Canada. When I got back I thought 'what the hey' and lite it up. It actually was better than before! I know, I don't believe it either. But it was.

My step father swears that a re-lite cigar is 10 times stronger.... I beg to differ.
???

To properly purge a cigar (for those that are 5 inches long, Robusto, Corona)

When you have to tip the Ash for a second time, tip the ash then Blow the smoke through the Cigar gently, BUT with your lighter lit at the end. You'll get a little flare up from your lighter (like throwing a match into too much fuel on the bbq grill) because of all the buildup of tar/chemicals that are being being incinerated. This flame flair up will undoubtely set the foot of the cigar on fire, kind of how when you light up for the first time. Let the flame die out, give a slow draw and now you have a lit Cigar, with a good chunk of the tar/chemicals burned off.

This dramatically lowers any harsh tastes and such.

I forgot where I got that information from. Maybe over at the CW forums.

Monkey K is right on about purging the cigar-I've heard that you don't want to let it sit extinguished for more than half an hour. I've only had to do that a couple of times, enough to come to the realizaiton that I probably will never do it again.! I agree totally that it just isn't the same after the initial light up, :( but to each their own.
