Is there any way to develop an area of the site that would post cigar names/vitolas etc. and allow members to rate, say from 1 through 10, cigars as they smoke them to create our own ratings system which due to the number of members would be a good representation of a cigar's assets. If somehow an average of all of the ratings of a particular cigar's assets was maintained, members would have a great tool for purchasing their next stick. Just a thought. If it is possible, I would be glad to help with the development. Any thoughts?

That's why we have a review section!

Remember...taste varies.

Gary stop being so negative, that's why none of the newbies like you!!!! ;)

Believe me, I understand taste varies, but saving a member the joy of smoking a piece of crap is a good thing. I appreciate the Review page, I just think a simple scoring system that is as I said, cumulative, would be a great tool. I guess the siscoll and ebert thing would work, but an average rating would certainly tell everyone when there is a homerun hit. :)

What would be a HR to you? A cigar rated 98 or 100? I believe the Siglo VI is rated pretty high, maybe a 96. I still prefer a nicely aged QdO Gran Corona or even a Monte #2 over a Siglo VI any day. The #2 is rated maybe a 90. But that 90 is my home run. There are plenty of cigars rated in the mid 80s to low 90s that a lot of people would've rated much higher and vice versa. Taste and opinions vary as was said before. Just smoke what you like.

If, as you say taste varies, then why is there a review section at all? It means nothing to anyone except the reviewer, because taste varies.................

As in all things regarding taste YMMV. I don't think people are saying it isn't a valid request, what they are saying is that taste is a subjective thing. I may not appreciate an Opus as much as someone else would. The same would be of inexpensive cigars, you may like AF Curly heads as an every day smoke and someone else would look at you as you had a horn growing out of your head.

Its a nice idea, but since we already have a review section, its kind of redundant, don't you think? How many cigars are out there currently being produced or have been produced? Could you imagine the size of the database needed to catalog such a vast list?

Reviews are not the end all be all of rating a cigar. Its meant to have a place to post ones "experience" with a cigar if they want to. To me, it would be the same as if we had such a database with a rating of 1-10 such as you suggested, except it wouldn't have the personal feel because it would just be a cumalative total of members "experiences" with said cigar. I would likely end up just searching the review forum anyways, so at that point, whats the use of it?

I subscribe to Cigar Aficionado and in each magazine they have kind of what you speak of. Lots of "reviews" every issue, that are basically just a "rating" with a little blurb about taste. Of course I am thinking you want the experiences of the general population here (instead of a magazine with "paid" reveiwers) and I completely understand that. However, if taste doesn't vary, as I think you suggest, then why not just buy their magazine and run with what they say? Why look here at all?

The other day I posted my first ever review of a cigar that I thought was a complete and utter dog. A piece of crap as you say. Other people joined in to comment how they had better experiences with said cigar. You can't pick that up off a "number". If I say its a 1, and 3 others say its an 8, thats an average score of 6.25. Now thats all you have and 6.25 rating on a 1-10 scale isn't great but it isn't crap either. So you go and buy a box because they are $3 MSRP/each, and a box costs you only $60. You pull one out, try it and then gag. Now your left with a $60 box of crap and wondering why this thing was rated a 6.25.

If you do a search on a forum for a type of cigar, and you read some reviews before choosing, isn't that better? Its still going to be hit or miss but wouldn't it give you a better overall feel?

Like I said its a nice idea, I just don't think its easy to implement or adds enough value to do so.

I prefer a review section to one that just puts a number rating on cigars.

I like to read what nuances the reviewer picks out of a cigar, how it performed, etc. Most of the time it's a cigar I have already smoked and I find myself thinking "Yeah, I got that too", or "WTF is he talking about". A number rating doesn't tell me much other than a certain average amount of people liked or did not like the vitola, and I'm still going to have to see for myself anyways.

Unless it's an Acid! I just send them all to Anthony. :)

That's why you keep those White Owls sitting on the dash!

Another item of note is...cigars change too! ;)

I guess, I'm not looking at it as a guy who has smoked a couple hundred labels, I am looking at as an area for perhaps new BOTL's who haven't got a clue or have had minimum exposure to cigars, to quickly get a snapshot of what a group of people find enjoyable. Sorry for the thought. I'll go to my mancave now and smoke a cigar while I lick my FOG inflicted wounds.

Nah, no need to go into seclusion. Just read some of the reviews out there. I'm sure when a new cigar comes out, they'll be plenty of reviews on them. I get the point you are making, why start off smoking crappy cigars. I just think that a rating page just loses its relevancy over time like Gary stated.

Gary insert picture in this thread! :)

I would say 90 or above
