I was gifted one of these semi box pressed cigars a month ago and, I figured yesterday was a good time to set fire to it.
I had been wanting to get my hands on one of these to try before buying a whole box. The cheap price and mixed reviews I'd seen kind of made me leary of investing in them.
This little sample was a really nice looking cigar with a light shade of wrapper and near flawless construction.

I made a nice clean cut on the cap and, after a positive test draw I smelled tobacco mixed with a hint of chocolate.
Toasted the foot and smelled the smoke that it gave off....... Hope that it taste as good as it smells.
After lighting and smoking for a few minutes I tasted burnt toast and white pepper. It never evolved much past this so, I would not call this sample a very complex smoke. It did however, stay consistent throughout with the two flavors noted above along with a strong tobacco taste in my mouth. The burn was even with a nice tight ash that grew considerably before falling. No touch up or, relights required.

Overall this was not a bad cigar. It would not go down as a standout but, I would give another a try just to see if any differences are noted. I have heard they can be inconsistent sometimes mediocre, sometimes fantastic. I know nothing of the age of this sample or, factory code. Just guessing, it seems that some more downtime would have done it justice.

Great review and pics. I have one of these resting right now, this is the first opinion I have heard on it.

Thanks,

Ken

Nice review bro, its nice to hear someone else's perspective on this (IMO) great cigar. I never really picked up on the chocolate taste but I agree that is semi-one dimesional. It is considered by some to be the strongest ISOM made.

I am not sure what the box code your smoking from, but I have found that these sticks are GREAT when about 4-5 yrs old, they do hit a sick period after about 6-9 months that I is not very pleasent. They start to become really enjoyable after 3 yrs. I have yet to have a plugged one and for $6.50 per (to me) is a good deal.

Confirms my suspicion that it needed down time. Did not taste chocolate at all. Just smelled it before lighting.

A good review that I can agree with. I remember when I 1st got into ISOMs I kept seeing post about this cigar so I bought some. I liked them at 1st but after a while they all turned to shit. So I am holding on to them for the long haul to see how they recover.

I have an early 06 box of these and found them to be fairly uneventful, nothing like the Bolivar RC's I really love.
I did however come across and smoke an 04 RASS and found it to still be fairly one dimensional but much better than the fresh ones I have a box of. I am planning on letting the remainder of my RASS sit in my coolerdor for a while.

I find them very enjoyable and they smoke well young. Well, not too young, the first year is a hit and miss,
I'm smoking out of a box that's 2 1/2 years old.

Nice review with pics.

I'm not very educated on ISOMs, but I have had my share of these and I like them. I could see having a box of these on hand.

:0 Yes, I noticed after posting the pic............... Opps!

My dog got a little carried away while playing a while ago and, bit down on my thumb instead of the frisbee. It's in that nasty half grown out stage. ;)
Didn't want to be rude and mention your thumb, could be it looks like that all the time. ??? Well, now I can mention your thumb - did you have to
spoil my dinner?

Nice review!

I've found these to be a pretty good cigar for the price. I agree with everyone that they get A LOT better with age. I've had a couple from a box from '03 that are pretty damn good and will let them rest for a little longer to see how they develop.

I have a review for an '05 I smoked a couple weeks ago that I'll try to post tonight. I had a much different experience, and I know that I am a noob, but this was a great, great cigar for me.

ISOM...buy them Put them in the humidor. and look at them, look some more and then look a little more. Hide them way in the back In an old punch or Mac. Box. Just so in 3 or 4 years you can smoke a really tasty smoke.

Man they are a lot of work. LOL

RA is one of my top five favorite Cuban brands BUT I really dislike the Specially Selecteds.

I really like the 898s and the PCs

Ah heck, I love the Gigantes and the RASCCs too! :D The Coronas were VERY NICE but they were discontinued and I keep hearing rumors of them coming back.
