Question on Cooling Cigars

Hi Folks,

Opinion question on storing my cigars. I unfortunetly do not have AC. Yes i know I am living in the stone age, but I don't have nor am I planning on getting it. So in the summer I move my humidor down in to the basment where it is usually 70 or less, although it is quite humid. The humidor (a DM) is doing a great job at keeping the humi at 68%, however the temp has reached 74 yesterday. Is anyone else in this boat with me and come up with a brilliant way of keeping the temp under 70 or am I the only cheap bastard with our ac.

Thanks,

- K

You could try putting your humi in a large cooler with some blue ice wrapped in towels to absorb the condensation. It's been done ;)

Hmm, that is drastic, but drastic times call for drastic measures right. So it think through peoples silence, it is agreed that 74 is the danger zone in terms of beetles.

My humidor ranges between 71-74, I am not too worried as at night it gets much cooler.

I had a similar situation last year...hot house, no AC. I bought a large cheap icechest from wallyworld and a large one of those blue ice packs. Throw your humidor inside the icechest, as far away from the ice as possible and put the ice pack in with it. Kept mine at about 65 degrees(which is a little cold, but its better than running the risk of beetles!). Id take the icepack out every other nite and re-freeze it...during the night it was fairly cool in the house and would still usually hold well under 70 degrees.

Well that cuts it, I am going to go and try to find the large variety of coolers and take this approach. Thanks for the remarkably simple and affective solution.

Just saw the thread - I'm in the same boat (no AC). Now, it doesn't get "hot" here in the PacNW and we have the advantage that it almost always cools way off at night. I'd very seriously considered putting my cooler under the house for the rest of the 95+ weather for the year (relatively easy to get to). The solution I just came on was to put my two humi's and the coolerdor in a rarely used closet on the ground floor of our house, away from any exterior walls. 95+ outside only gets to about 72 in that closet. Good enough for now, methinks....

Good luck - B.B.S.

The cooler option works quite well to keep the temp down when it is rising. IMHO I think you're alright if the highest it goes is 74. Now, long term storage might be a bit different. You want the temp constant.

For pretty short money you can buy one of those Haier wine coolers. I know a lot of guys using it with great results. Cigars stay around 65 degrees.

what's with you guys trying to cool DOWN from 74?!?!? I'd like to warm UP to 74!

never had this problem up here... but I suppose I could send some glacier ice down to help... :p

Unfortunetly I am a cheap bastard without AC. With the weather breaking this weekend the house has finally gotten under 75 in the house so the cellar is under 70 which is good for the smoke. However I know I am going have to deal with this next year. I was wondering how do the temp controled humidors work, do they have their own refrigeration, or do they have some sort of mini heat pump?

K

Temp controlled humidors have their own seperate air conditioners in them.
