I recieved the following from my local shop via e-mail, and thought I'd pass it on:

ACTION ALERT!

Well it is that time of year again when we all have to make our voices heard for our Cigar / Tobacco Rights

Maryland: Proposed Excise Tax Increases!

Contact your Senators and Delegates and Tell Them NO NEW TAXES!

Maryland Premium Tobacconists and Consumers! Two separate bills have been introduced in the Assembly both calling for dramatic increases to tobacco excise taxes paid on cigars and other premium tobacco! If these tax increases are signed into law it would increase the excise tax rate by 500%!

House Bill 853 and Senate Bill 654 both propose increasing the Other Tobacco Products (OTP) excise tax rate from 15% to 90%! Such a tax increase will effectively dessimate retail sales of cigars and other premium tobacco products in Maryland!

Please click on the link below to contact your representative regarding these two bills!

Um - that title should be

PSA: Cigar Taxes in Maryland

Guess I had Partagas on my mind...

Great...run off all the tobacco sales aka tax revenue and go after home owners. I propose the Bill 2011-2a called Home Owners and Apartment Renters Excise Tax aka HOAARET for short. The bill would cause resident's house taxes to increase 300% yearly and Renters would be initially taxed 250% of their yearly income for the first year. Then it will increase to 500% the following year. Then the excise tax for owning a home and renting would increase 300% every 2 years.

This would allow Renters to purchase a home and pay a reasonable excise tax yearly.

Ok sarcasm off. Unfortunately this type of scenario on a smaller % scale will happen when all other excise taxes have caused Americans to quit doing things the government deems unhealthy for you. Gotta love it. I'm still wanting to see a Special Excise Tax for Toys. It needs to be at least 90% so that the rest can get a pinch in their wallet since you absolutely do not need toys to raise a child. :D
