Proper smoking technique

I haven't seen this topic discussed here so I thought it might be a good time to talk about it since there have been a lot of new people joining recently.

Proper smoking technique is when you take the smoke into your mouth and then exhale part or all of the smoke through your nose. This technique is used by all of the people who are in the business, growers, rollers, blenders, tasters everyone who is involved in making cigars uses this technique.

The reason being is that without the nose, you cannot judge strength or the full flavor of a cigar. Try drinking a glass of orange juice holding your nose, you taste nothing.

Proper smoking technique does take some practice, inhaling the smoke into your lungs is not a proper technique. It might take some practice but once you get used to it, you will enjoy your cigars to a much greater extent.

I have been practicing this for the last two weeks, after reading someone's post about it, and I love it. I have found that the differences between good and very good cigars come out through the nasal passage. For example, last night I smoked my first xXx, and through the nose it had tremendous flavor, very little burning sensation. On Tuesday, I had a Padron 3000, which also had a great smell and very little burning. On Wednesday, I had a Padron Delicios[sp?], that had average taste, even less so through the nose, and burned strongly through it. The taste is really brought out by the technique.

Thanks for the post, as it is posts like yours that really help to improve people like me in smoking.

Great info Master.... Now why don't you go ahead and cover the proper way to hold a cigar as well... I know when I began, I did not know so maybe some of the others can benefit from this as well. :)

One thing you must do to appreciate any cigar is to exhale some smoke through your nose. This gives you the strength of a cigar and it also adds to the taste big time.

I saw Carlito doing this a lot on the Opus X DVD, and I haven't figured out how to do that without actually inhaling the smoke past your mouth into your lungs.

Thoughts?

Lumberg, close your mouth and force the smoke through your nose. Try keeping your tounge against the roof of your mouth.

The proper way to hold a cigar is what ever is comfortable for you . I happen to keep the cigar between my first and second fingers.

I happen to be smoking a Litto Gomez Diez right now, and tried what you said, Master, and I can't get it up into my nasal cavity without forcing the smoke back into my throat. I don't usually let the smoke get past the back of my tongue, as it irritates my throat. Maybe I am built different, or maybe the smoke is supposed to go back into your throat.

Master?

Lumberg, yes you should feel the smoke in the back of your throat. Keep doing it and you will get used to it.

hmm...yea it's a nice technique, i did it once and damn it hurt in my nose (it got tears into my eyes)not a nice feeling, but i suppose you get used to it, right?

Ekans, yes you get used to it and then enjoy it. You will find that if you don't do it you are missing what the potential of the cigar is.

This is an easy one for us who smoke cigarettes as well :)

Ekins, let just a little smoke thru the nose. I exhale maybe 75% of the smoke thru the mouth then the last 25% thru the nose.

I thought that came natural, (through the nose) for smokers. When I smoke, I tend to "lose" the flavor of the cigar on the palate and when that happens, I'll exhale the next two or three puffs through the nose. For me, it's essential to exhale through the nose to enjoy ALL of the cigars distinct flavors.

Thanks for the great post, did anyone else feel stupid for not already knowing this? ??? I will definately be giving this a try soon. Im such a noobler.

In the beginning you will feel a very strong stinging sensation. The more you do it the more you get used to it. Some cigars will always sting pretty good, like the Opus X. Like cigars&rum said you can exhale some through your mouth and then the rest through your nose if the stinging is that severe.

Once you really get used to it, you will find yourself doing it on every exhale. Cigars you thought were mild ( Ashton Cabinet for example ) will now be in the medium strength department due to the nose.

I never you were suppose to do this, but I did anyways. :) I used to smoke cigarettes so I started doing it with cigars out of habit.

I have been blowing cigarsmoke out of my nose for a long time. Some of my friends have tried it, but gave up after it stung their noses. I think it really helps to get as much out of the cigar as possible. You can tell a lot of the overall strength of the cigar like this and of course, like The Master said, it completes the flavors together with what you perceive with your mouth.

Excellent post! Its a little bit of a tough technique to master, but like stated above, the best way to do it is draw in a mouthful, close your mouth and press your tounge against the roof of your mouth to push the smoke to the back of your throat. Then, just exhale through your nose. It might burn a little your first few times, but youll quickly appreciate the extra flavors youll notice. I dont do it with every draw...maybe every other few to fully experience the taste. Try it with a spicey cigar...like an Opus X and youll think you just set your nasal passages on fire....PURE HEAVEN!! :D
