Problems with RH in my cooler-dor

I am having problems with humidification in my cooler-dor. I purchased an electronic hydrometer and humidor beads from CheapHunidors.com (before I found this site). When I received my shipment I tested my hydrometer using the salt test. It was three degrees low so I adjusted it and placed it in my cooler-dor with a small Tupperware container filled with the beads and soaked them with distilled water (I didn’t fill the container with water just a third full and let the beads absorb whatever they needed). When I checked it the next day the RH was 78 and temp 68. I have two questions, is 78% RH too high? And why would the RH be so high if the beads are manufactured to maintain 70% RH. The cooler-dor is a 16 qt (986 cubic inch) cooler not very large. I did a search before I decided to post this question and I did not find a post with the same problem as myself.

Thank you in advance

Dry your beads out with a hair dryer, put them back in cooler "dry" , give it 48 hours , report back

Although I'm a newbie here myself I think most people on this forum would agree 78%rh is to high. I would guess the reason that your at 78% instead of the 70% promised by the beads is because you soaked them completely which would not allow them to absorb moisture from the air. Then you put in a second source of humidity in as well causing it to go well past the 70%. Anyway the advice above about drying the beads out will fix your problem.

Usually, there are directions included with the beads. You only saturate some of them with distilled water. 78% is WAY too high, BTW.

Thank you all for the fast replies. The directions say to spray them lightly with distilled water that must be the problem with high humidity in my cooler-dor. I only used 1/3 of the beads so I will replace them with dry beads. Do you think I ruined my cigars with that much humidity?

Should be no problem, do not worry, the cigars will adjust and be fine. However, those cigars will be and better be ruined very soon....... With Fire.

Thanks sweetrice80. I don't have many cigars right now. I've had problems keeping my cigars from drying out, but now that I have this cooler-dor I plan on stocking up as soon as I get the right conditions. I notice you're from College Park, MD; I use to live in a small town called Arnold, MD about 3 miles from Annapolis, MD. Also that reference about terrible towels means you're a Steelers fan?

I do know where Annapolis is but not Arnold, Md. You still live around these parts? Also, die hard Steelers fan here, no doubt about it.

Arnold, MD is straight down/up Ritchie Highway (route 2) about 3 miles before/after the Bay Bridge. I've lived in a lot of different places. Right now I live in the Boston, MA area and I'm not a Patriot fan. I grew up in the Buffalo, NY area so I cheer for the Buffalo Bills. I'm hoping for an upset this weekend and if not at least a close game. If the Bills win I might have to purchase an Opus cigar and smoke it in celebration Good luck to your team this weekend.
