Hello all. Hope you guys can help me out. I bought a humidor from Thompson cigars 2 months ago. It was my first Humi so i didnt want to spend much. Now after whats happened i wished i just got a DM humidor. I followed the directions exactly to set up the humidor. The digital gauge read 72% when i left for my trip. This was two weeks after i got the Humidor. I put my stash of cigars in it and left for my trip. When i returned 3 weeks later. The humidor gauage was reading 54%. Now i dont know how long it was like that but the cigars were somewhat dry and spots began to appear on them. I recharged the humidifier and checked back a week later and the digital gauge read 79%. Honestly i think i paid for what i got chep humidifers. Anyway i was wondering if i got the puck could i just take the humidifers out and just use the work and that would be fine?

It took my humi several weeks (maybe even closer to a month) for everything to settle down and stabilize. It sounds like the humi wasn't properly seasoned, hence why the humi sucked up all of the moisture from the puck when you left and is now back up after charging it. Once the humi is seasoned properly, I don't think you will have the problems that you are having now.

I would suggest looking into some heartfelt beads. Get beads and forget about it. They have been working great for me. ;)

Wel i havent used a puck yet. Was wondering if that what i should do? Honeslty i think the humidifer are crap because im pretty sure there now suppose to feel like their soaking wet inside.

Step one is to properly season your humidor. Do a search on how to do this. Only after you're positive that it's properly humidified should you worry about humidifiers not working. Like Mac said above, if it wasn't properly humidified, then it will suck all humidity out of a humidifier (yes, even if it's wet) and dry that sucker out.

Lost me on this one... ???

YOu know how a sponge when its filled with water its heavy. Well thats how one of the humidifiers feels. The other two humidifers feel light.

In order to properly season it. Should i just open the humidor and leave it open 24-48 hours and then go through the correct process of seasoning it?

When I used the humidification device (before I got beads) it would feel like a soaked spnge as well. When it needed to be recharged, it would feel lighter. I'm a bit confused as to why you have three humidification devices in the humi... plus a puck? How big is the humi?

Seasoning is very important with a new humi. I would charge the humidification devices with distilled water, put them in the humi (without cigars of course), close the lid and leave it for a week or so. This should do the trick. I also wiped the inside down with a damp paper towel (distilled water always). This worked fine for me... but some guys don't recommend this. I probably would stick with the method of just putting charged huidification devices or even a shot glass full of H20 and then just leaving it alone for a bit. My impatience got the best of me though...

Have you checked the seal? Do the flashlight test...

Where do you live? What's the ambient humidity in the room that contains your humidor? If it's very low and your seal is not good, there's your problem.

Salt test your hygrometer so you know what's really going on. The fluctuations show a problem, but without a baseline on the hygro, your shooting into the dark. Who knows, maybe when it was reading 72% the actual humidity was 88% and when it was reading 54% it was actually 70%...

If your seal is good and you know what your hygro is really telling you, it's likely that the seasoning process was not complete. The last small wooden humidor I seasoned took almost 3 weeks with the humidity device (beads) fully charged and a bowl of water left undisturbed. Personally, I wouldn't wipe it down. It takes patience to properly season a wooden humidor.

After you get it seasoned properly get some beads or The Puck from Mark at Cigarmony and relax. After all, that's what this hobby is all about.

Howdy,

First, make sure you get a digital hygrometer and calibrate it.

The Puck-ifier utilizes the RH Beads technology and is the most simple and accurate way to regulate relative humidity. It is designed to replace the existing humidifiers and not to be used with them.

Hope this helps

First and foremost welcome to CP!

As for the humidor, many here have more patience than I, but I was NEVER able to get any of my 4 desktop humi's to stay at 68%. They would bounce wildly between 60 and 74! The beads I got actually made things worse and I couldn't get the humidity above 62%! Either way, one of the most important things is seasoning! Secondly, daily monitoring is a must! If you want to avoid that, the only way I know how is to order an Aristocrat with set and forget humidifier/hygrometer! Good luck, and welcome again! Mason

Help us help you. Give us a rundown of what you have done at this point. To include salt testing, calibrating hydros, what you did to season the humi, and for how long. Are you using 50/50 with the oasis devices, or just water? Have you purchased the puck, or some other sort of beads...themore detailed the better. Make it a bullet list, not a paragraph.

1. Did this
2. Then this
3. Tried this and this
4. so on and so on

Then the guys here with the knowledge can dig in and help you.

Before you do this, do a search first, there are hundreds of post in this forum on this subject. If you need help searching, and after you have tried on you own, PM me. I will help you search out your information.
